Hi-8 Capture
on Jan 19, 2005 at 11:17:35 pm

I have a library of Hi-8 analog tapes that I'd like to edit on my PC. I have been lead to believe that a digital Hi-8 camcorder will read my analog tapes and will provide a digital output via firewire to the PC. Can someone confirm that? Thanx.

Yes, most, but not all, Sony Digital8 camcorders will digitize 8mm and Hi8 video tapes and export the video over the firewire cable.

John,
How does the quality compare doing it that way compared to letting an analoge capture device do the work (from a non-firewire camcorder)?

Since you're using the mpeg encoder chip in the camcorder, the quality is about as good as it gets. Granted that 8mm and Hi8 don't have resolution quite as good as DV, so it still won't look as sharp as original DV.
