I'm tempted to buy Ulead's mpeg4 plugin for VideoStudio 8 for $30 but i wanted to know if anyone has had any experience with mpeg4. Will i be able to make mpeg4 files out of my avis? Is the quality and/or file size significantly better than mpeg2? Will i be able to get more than an hour of footage on a dvd with mpeg2 quality or better? I'm now making movies that go beyond the hour mark but i only get an hour of footage. So is it worth it? Thanks.
If you're trying to create a DVD that will play on any DVD player, then it's not worth it, even if it was free. Standard DVD players will not play MPEG4 encoded video. They're designed to play MPEG2-IBP encoded video with either PCM or Dolby audio.
If you drop your bitrate to 4899 or less and your audio to 192 Dolby, then you can fit 2 hours of video on a DVD. Otherwise, use a higher bitrate, build a DVD folder on your hard drive, and use DVD Shrink to squeeze it to fit.
