DV? . . . surely it can't be this hard!!!
on Jun 20, 2004 at 11:53:13 am

Old system:
PII300; 256k; Win98;MSPro 5.2;Rainbow Runner

New system:
P4-2.6G;512k;Win2K;Firewire card (came with Video Studio 5.0)

All I want to do is capture DV to hard drive, edit it with MSPro5.2 and then record back to DV or S-video.

MSPro 5.2 Video Capture see's the DV source but can't capture, says something about "can't find drivers" or something.

Video Studio sees and plays DV from camera, but I can't seem to figure out how to capture it onto the HD so MSPro5.2 can edit it. Video Studio seems too hard for me to understand. I'm use to MSPro.

If I upgrade to MSPro7, will this solve my problem? Or is there a way to do it with what I have now?

Try scenalyzer.

Yes, you can capture with VS5 and edit in MSP5.2, if you want to. Begin by creating a new project with NTSC or PAL DV project properties. I think that in both programs you must change the capture plug-in to "Ulead Direct Show Capture Plug-in". In VS5 begin playing the DV tape and click the capture icon on the "Capture" menu. Your video should begin playing on the preview screen, but you won't see any video until you begin capturing. The procedure should be similar for MSP5.2.

I got to try to find a manual for VS. The Help is useless. Can't find the file using MSPro, when I try to "finish" in VS, save, it say's "rendering" then "failed to save file".

Were you able to try scenalyzer? Scenalyzer is simple and is a great utility.

It captures in a format that you can then edit with MSP.

At least this will let you know if you are having hardware or software troubles.

What are the properties of your source video and your output/Make Movie settings. In VS5 if the video properties match exactly, including the frame type (Frame based/Field Order A/Field Order B), the video won't be re-rendered except for the parts that have been changed (filters, transitions, titles, etc.).

OK, found VS manual, thanks.

Finally captured with VS5.0 (easy, any dummy could do it Wink )

Now, MSPro 5.2 can't open the clip, says "AVI file contains no video data"

Is there a setting (maybe compression) somewhere I need to change, or will MSPro 5.2 just not read the new DV AVI files?

Have you installed all the available updates to both VS5 and MSP5.2?
