I am looking for a new laptop to use with Avid MC for editing both HDV and DSLR HD footage. I need the laptop to be able to capture via Firewire and also work with file-based HD media. I'm looking for something that has the ability to grow with me for what is on the horizon - UHD and 4K HD video editing. Finally, I need the laptop to be as self contained as possible as I will be taking it on the road occasionally in my camper van where there is often no AC plug-in available. I'm leaning toward the new HP Zbook 17" workstation laptop due to SSD OS drive, dual 7200 RPM HD's for RAID 0 media drive, Thunderbolt port for future growth into UHD and 4K HD video editing, ExpressCard port for Firewire and Avid Certified NVIDIA GPU card. The MacBook Pro 15 looks interesting but has limited screen real estate, and no internal media HD. The Lenovo W540 15" workstation laptop with Thuderbolt port and ExpressCard port also looks interesting. Has everything I need except limited screen real estate. Given how I am planning on using the laptop, what would you buy?
It's got everything you are looking for except Firrewire. You can add a firewire express card for under $50.
