DIY8 Build
on Mar 10, 2011 at 10:26:05 am

Hi there
Have just built the DIY 8 as below..

Just a query re HDD config. Have currently got 2 x 600Gb in RAID0 config on the 2 SATA6 ports for video & 300Gb on one of the SATA3 ports for o/s..
Is this the best configuration.. Or something different.?
Am also looking at a 32Gb SDD for separate paging file.

Would appreciate any advice.

Many thanks

ideally you have 2 sets raid 0 plus OS.

you do not want to read and write from the same drive array (unless doing a large (8+ drive) raid 5)

so you have 1 set for media 1 set for export/final render...

Cheers Scott

Good advise.. But also wondering about the RAID0 or o/s best being on the SATA6 connections..?

Thanks Guy

SATA6 is more for Solid State Drives. So in the end the drives you mentioned don't really matter if it is connected to a SATA6 or SATA3 port. The HDD is not fast enough to max out bandwidth capability of the port.

to my knowledge

+1 pretty much what Lee said
the only time it matters is if on a good controller. and even then not much.
on the other hand if buying new drives you do want to buy Sata 600

more important is the 64meg cache.

Thanks for those comments guys..!

Have now added the following:
2 x WD Caviar Black 500GB 32MB 7200rpm SATA3 in RAID0 for output renders and media cache.
1 x Adata 2.5 SATA II S596 Turbo SSD 32GB for page file and ReadyBoost.

Does the Win7 Readyboost function work in conjunction with the pagefile or is it best to have one or other..?

Many thanks..

Cheers

Guy
