hard drive size in raid set-up.
on Dec 29, 2008 at 2:34:19 am

Hello everyone. I'm looking into getting a couple of hard drives and striping them together in a raid 0 set up. Is there an optimum size for performance in the size of each drive in the raid? For example, Other than more storage space, is it better to stripe say 2 250GB drives together than 2 500GB drives? Thank you in advance.

bigger is better

the Seagate 500G and above have 32meg cache (the 320G does as well but they tend to be louder than the others)

Thank you Scott. I was actually reading about the Seagate drives on newegg.com. I think that will be the way to go. Never used a raid set-up before, but moving into HD is pushing me to step up. I'll eventually go raid 5, but right now, baby steppin. lol Thanks again.

HI John,
also dont forget to take into consideration
what ever amount of storage you think you need double it.

once you fill a drive past 65% (less with alot of onboard controllers) your speed deminished exponentially the more you fill it.
@80% your speed is 1/2.
