ECC ? Unbuffered RAM?
on Aug 23, 2008 at 9:26:05 pm

I am building a DIY 6 box. I am trying to order RAM and Newegg just doubled their price on Corsair XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory, DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666), 240-Pin, Model: TW3X4G1333C9DHX (now $349.00 ea. up from $197.00 last week)

I have found some available at the lower price ($199.00 each) from Directron.com. The ones they offer are the same desciption except : Unbuffered, Non-ECC. .

Does the unbuffered, non ECC make a difference or are all of them this way?

Would it make much difference to go to the DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) for an extra $20.00 per pair?

Thanks.

The buffered/ECC memory is one used for servers, it is slower than the non-ecc and ussually only server mobos accept it.

Non ECC is ok for video ediditng and the fastest you can afford, the better.

Thanks for the help.
I also talked with one of the Video Guys and he suggested, correctly, to check the motherboard specs to see what would work. I went to the ASUS site, looked up the board and there it was "non ECC, nonbuffered memory".
