1. I just had a 500GB external hard disk. How best do can I use this for editing? I mean, can I make the drive for preview disk or capture disk?
2. What major significance does Duo core or Core2Duo has in video editing work? At the moment, I use P4 2.8Ghz Gigabyte board with 1GB RAM, VGA on-board (not sure of the size but guess, between 32 & 64). What really do I stand to gain if I upgrade this spec. for Duo core or Core2Duo? Your quick response is appreciated in advance.
3. How do I know my hard disk data transfer rate and also the VGA on-board size?
I never suggest using an external drive for editing. (although I do it on a rare occasion) try installing a drive in the case and free up the 1394 port. (RAID 0 two drives if you are getting dropped frames) I hope an NLE program will not let you use your external drive as a preview or scratch disk. (not a very wise thing to do)
the new processors will only help speed up render times. add 1 gig of RAM if you want a cheap boost.
A non on-board video card would be a nice addition 128-256MB modern card would be nice. (that will allow you to stop sharing your MOBO's RAM with on-board video)
lastly every good editing machine should have a UPS connected to it, in case the power goes out for a second or more.
