975x or 680i system?
on Feb 26, 2007 at 10:35:00 pm

I am looking to build a system, but I’m not sure which direction I should go – 975x or 680i motherboard. With the 680i I can get the latest 680i cards that support DirectX10 and OpenGL, but the 975x runs a little cheaper (depending on which motherboard I get). I was thinking about something along these lines but not sure which is better or if either of these will get the job done for video editing (I will also be doing some 3D work):

Foxconn 975X7AB-8EKRS2H Intel Socket 775 ATX Motherboard
2xRadeon X1650 Pro IceQ Turbo / 512MB GDDR3 / PCI Express / Dual DVI / HDTV (or 2xX1600)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
2048MB PC5400 DDR2 667MHz (2x1gb)
250GB SATAII
500GB SATAII
DVD Dual-Layer Burner

OR
EVGA nForce 680i SLI NVIDIA Socket 775 ATX Motherboard
EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB PCI Express Video Card
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
2x 1200MHz DDR2 (SLI-Ready)
250GB SATAII
500GB SATAII
DVD Dual-Layer Burner

the old--- price verses speed.
get the fastest system for the cheapest price. ie don't spend an extra 200-400 bucks for .2Ghz. (ie 3.4Ghz vs 3.6Ghz) .2GHz ain't gonna render your video that much faster. Half the time i walk away and come back after grabbing a bite to eat. (i never know how long it took)

besides, in 2-4 years you'll be building a new system.

make sure all your hardware is vista ready, so when you retire it as a NLE, you can use it as an office computer and can use Vista
