Movie file (mpeg2) files not supported

Hi hope some one can point me in the right direction I bought myself a little 30 GIG HDD camcorder today JVC GZ-MG36EK the format is MPEG2 but i cannot import my files into premiere pro 2 it reads file format is not supported I am very new at this have I done wrong or is there another way to get the files into prem pro 2 to edit them and make my own dvd's.

Please please help

Premeire Pro will not edit MPEG2 files. Avid Liquid, Vegas and and Edius will.

what camera would work good for premiere pro2

Hi thanks for the reply what format would be the best for this software looking to spend around £500.00 mark camera will be just for home use and holidays.

I couldn't swear to it but I think Premiere Elements will import Mpeg 2 files. (much cheaper than Premiere Pro as well)

I had the same problem with Premiere. I used a converter that converts MPEG2 to MPEG1. I can' remember what it was called though. try download.com
