SPAMMERS - HELP!!!
on Dec 4, 2006 at 3:21:37 pm

Hi guys,

We are getting over-run by spammers. posting porn, viagra, investments etc.

I am having to delete several posts a day. If i miss a day or two, it gets even worse. What can we do to fix this. The Forum that gets hit the worst is our getting started forum

http://videoguys.forumexperts.com/viewforum.php?f=6

My guess is that this is a hacking script and someone has figured out a way to automate this. We need to get it stopped. ASAP.

Gary

Unfortunately this is a growing problem on all message boards across the internet. I have installed several anti-spambot modifications on every forum, and this has cut the number of spam messages by about 90%. What you are seeing now are real people taking the time and energy to post spam manually. Your best course of action is going to be just what you are doing now, deleting the spam. I would suggest "recruiting" one or two of your more well-known regulars into the ranks of moderators so that they may help. Any more automated systems I install would hamper the participation of legitimate users.

Currently new users must type in obscured text from an automated graphic in order to register on the forum. This is also known as a 'Captcha'. They must also supply a working email address and be able to receive an email with a special validation code. Without it they can not post. These two things alone weed out most bots.

I am constantly looking for new ways to battle the spammers. It has become the #1 most time consuming job we do here now. I will follow up on this issue. More 2 come.

I have installed a better validation graphic system (captcha) on the register page. We'll see if this reduces the amount of bots. Please, for the next few days, instead of deleting any new spam, move it to the "Spam" forum which is hidden. This is so I can analyze it and possibly come up with a better solution.

I've also banned large portions of Russia and India by IP address. A lot of it was coming from there. If you do a lot of business in these countries, let me know and I'll remove the block Wink

When you post a new topic, there is a line in the "Options" section where you can mark it as sticky. You can't make replies sticky, only new topics.
