Dell 220 dual Pentium: Upgrade or replace?
on Nov 24, 2006 at 1:17:53 am

I'm looking for more performance...and like most, want to spend as little as poss.

I'm running Premier Pro 1.5 on a Dell 220 with dual 1Ghz processors, 768Gb RAM, Matrox G450 dual-head, 2 x 37Gb Quantum Atlas SCSI, 1 x 160Gb Maxtor 6Y120PO IDE and 1 x 250Gb Toshiba USB drive, Firewire, DVD writer etc.

I'm no expert and have no idea if my motherboard could or should take faster processors etc. Is the drive set up total rubbish? Everyone seems to talk about SATA now. Is the Matrox card up to scratch?

Can the Dell be economically upgraded or would that be a waste of money? If I start from scratch, what would be worth keeping from the Dell?

Help! Advice gratefully received.

The dell is to old to upgrade. For under $1,000 you can buy or build a machine that will run circles around it.

I had a feeling it was a bit long in the tooth for upgrading. Is the Matrox card still OK?

The matrox card is an agp card. The new motherboard will have PCIe graphics.

My advice is to use the dell for someone else. Its still more than enough for other tasks besides video
