Guidance Line Tracking Assistance
on Jun 5, 2019 at 4:42:00 pm

Good afternoon all!

I hope everyone is doing well! I recently posted a couple weeks back about simple line tracking via motion 5 and, while it did set me on the right direction, I still can't seem to emulate what SEEMS to be such a simple concept. I figure the best way to ask the question would be to provide actual examples of what I am trying to emulate. Below are several instagram posts of tracking lines. Can anyone here help guide me on this? I've spent hours (I know, I suck) just even trying to draw the shapes (such as the lines with a circle at the end of of each point) or the dotted lines. Or such as those shaded angle spaces. Or even trying to draw bent lines with hinges. I see a lot of youtubers/instagrams employ this effect so it has to be common, yet I can't find a solution to it. I'm sure it's simple, but I just can't figure it out. Are these guys using some kind of plugin? I know this person uses, by admission, FCPX and motion 5.

I would really appreciate some help here. Perhaps even a video tutorial where I can get started and continue experimenting. What I currently know about motion is to draw simple shapes, like lines.

I for one use After Effects for work like this.

However, Larry Jordan has a tutorial video:

Hi, thanks for getting back to me! I actually saw this video a couple weeks ago and it didn't work unfortunately. What happens is that I try to use it and it will "distort" the shape of the line when tracking.

You mentioned that you used After Effect? I have access to it due to my university and was wondering if you thought that was better and easier? I have NEVER used after effects before and aside from this particular effect, I've avoided using it since I'm just trying to do simple editing. If so, do you have a quick tutorial video you could show me that can help me achieve these very same effects? I feel like motion 5 SHOULD be able to do this since others have done it...

Lastly, would After Effects even work with FCPX?

This would be super simple if Motion let you link Geometry Contol Points to other parameters. I've always been puzzled why Apple has not added that feature. There are many simple things Apple could do to make Motion much more powerful.

Not exactly sure what that means...but is it still possible to achieve said effects from the examples above through Motion 5 or a plugin in FCPX? I am actually surprised that there isn't a plugin like this already available.

That particular individual said that he used FCPX and Motion 5 to achieve those effects though. Is this possible?

The Ripple Callouts plugin might be a good start. I don't own it myself but combined with some good old fashioned keyframing I'd think that would do 90% of what I saw in the samples.

Interesting. I actually tried using Ripple Callouts (and even coremelt--Believe me, I exhausted my known options before posting here) to see if I could emulate that by trying their trial on FxFactory. Does this mean you think this effect can be done just via Keyframing on FCPX? That still wouldn't explain the elaborate shapes, which I can't seem to find or replicate on Ripple, such as the lines with the circle on both ends.

I don't have Ripple Callouts because I'd generally just build my own, it just looked like they had enough building block to shortcut things.

A line with a dot on each end is just that. Draw a dot, draw another dot, draw a line between them and group them together. then animate the group as needed. Alternatively you could track the dots in place, then draw in the line and manually keyframe each end of it (and maybe even the curve of it) to follow the dots.

Whether you'd want to keyframe or track would probably depend on the amount of movement and the length of the clip but for short, simple stuff like the examples you showed, key framing is definitely an option. Most likely a combination of the two techniques.

With motion graphics it's rare to find an out of the box solution that just works. It's usually about creating individual building blocks, then putting them together and applying different techniques to get the end result.

Moving away from FCPX and Motion and into something more advanced like After Effects or Fusion you could do something like track the dots, draw the line, then script each end-point of the line to follow a dot if the line stays straight, and just keyframe a curve in the line if it needed to bend for any reason.

Could you please elaborate further? I have tried all those options. For instance, I tried doing the "group" option in motion 5, which didn't help because I couldn't add a "Track Point" behavior to the group. So I tried adding a circle to each end and then added the track points, but when it tracked, it would distort my circle. I have tried everything so if anyone can be more specific or even show me screenshots that would be appreciated. It's been very frustrating because I feel like this shouldn't be the hardest thing, among many other things, others do to animate. And yet I'm struggling just to do this.

Thank you and I appreciate the patience and help
