Looking for a way to do simple FCPX animations/graphics with a tablet.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a plug-in, or possibly some standalone software I could export 1080HD from, that would let me record real-time drawing with a wacom bamboo tablet?

the ideal would be direct input to FCPX in real-time, so I could also use it to add underlines or rings around bits of text or draw an arrow to highlight a particular part of an image.

I have some plug-ins that will create underlines and circles that look drawn, but it would be so much quicker and easier to just draw them in straight from a tablet. Same for things like simple graphs etc - there's software to create these things, but I'd rather just quickly draw my own, as if using a whiteboard in a lecture.

Is this possible? Any ideas/workarounds/suggestions very welcome.

I'm on FCPX 10.4 and OSX 10.12.6 here.

Have you tried using QuickTime screen record when using your tablet? Trim out the parts you don’t need and save?

If you don’t have compressor, you can right-click on the resulting QuickTime file, choose “encode” at the bottom of the contextual menu and select 1080 from the drop down. Then save and let it encode it.

My 2cents

Quicktime record sounds feasible for standalone 'whiteboard' style illustrating, thanks - will try.

I've only played a little with Motion (for tweaking FCPX effects occasionally) so this sounds like quite a learning curve, but I'll have a look around for freehand mask tuts and see if i get anywhere - really surprised if no-one's turned that capability into a ready-made plugin though.

If I wasn't clear about what I'm trying to do, it's because I see the capability as having several uses, but here's couple of for instance examples:

1 I'm creating a series of punchier short films based on some great ideas badly presented in a rather boring lecture, and i want to quickly create some bespoke diagrams, that i'd find very easy to quickly draw, and somewhat slower to create graphically,

2 I'm creating a title sequence, with a handwritten caption appearing in real hand-writing time on screen (my own hand-writing, not a font).

Apple Motion has a fresh and mask option. Not sure what you’re trying to do exactly, but maybe it’s worth looking at?

I meant to say freehand mask, not fresh and mask. Motion has a freehand mask option.

Not sure what a fresh and mask is, but autocorrect seems to like it.

I've realised that capturing the screen with quicktime isn't giving me the effect i need, because you can of course see the drawing tool in whatever app you're capturing. i want to see the output of what i'm drawing, not the tool i'm using to draw it. does that make sense?

Are you wanting to draw in real time on a playing video during a lecture?

Or is this marking up a prerecorded lecture for export and later viewing?

Just looking to mark up and put diagrams into a video edit, not live, but showing the pen strokes without the pen.

I think the motion freehand mask is going to be the way to go. Either that, or creating a hand drawn graphic in Illustrtor or similar, and masking it in FCPX to create the illusion of drawing.

As you mention, there are plugins that simulate some of these actions, but they aren’t custom.

Just to list a few:

i can imagine all sorts of use for a freehand custom plug-in of this sort - plug-in designers take note!!

have seen those plug-ins you mention, and use them sometimes, but just love the idea of being able to do freehand versions on a connected tablet.
will have to try and get to grips with motion and maybe even end up[ creating my own plug-in perhaps? - seems a bit daunting as i've never progressed far in that app and don't use it often enough to rmember what i've learnt each time i've tried.
