Trail of crumbs back to original files?
on Mar 30, 2018 at 5:32:15 pm

Back in the Day of legacy, FCP kept track of the source of imported files, so if in the case you needed to re-link files Legacy could tell you were they came from. Does X do this? I've been doing digital forensics until my eyes bleed looking for some camera original files. I found a back up version of the project library minus the media, now looking for the camera originals however X doesn't seem to keep track of where they came from, or does it and I just can't find the right place?

If that info is anywhere, it would be in one of the entries in the inspector panel for that file.

For libraries using external or "non managed" media, the library contains a symbolic link (or symlink) for each external media file. To see these and where they point, open the library in Finder by right click>Show Package Contents. Then navigate to the event name, then original media folder, and within that are the symlinks. For each one you can right-click and select "Get Info", and it will show the original file path.

I think the latest version of Library File Manager will read the library and export a CSV file of each media file path: https://www.arcticwhiteness.com/finalcutlibrarymanager/

I was rooting around in the inspector hoping to find the info I need buried there, but no Luck. You’ve given me 2 ways to look deeper into the so my hope is to now find the trail of crumbs back to the original files.

When you choose relink in FCPX it shows the last location of the missing file. It's at the bottom of the window.

What I’m really struggling with is digital forensics. I’ve only got a back up of the original library& project after I had shuffled some things around so the relinking isn’t offer any help. This is effort has become a lot of pick and shovel and I fear the library has been lost some how. I found 8 random clips from the library I brought into another library so at least I have that, but its not much.

So when you try to relink a file it doesn’t show you the last location like in the screenshot? The relinking process is pretty much the same as FCP 7, except waaay more particular. If the files seem to be gone, about all you can do is search your whole system with spotlight.

The files do seem to be gone. I use neofinder to catalog my ever growing stack of hard drives, so yes I’ve searched with neofinder and spotlight. Its weird - everything is gone. I’m not blaming FCPX in any way - its likely pilot error in this case .
