replacing multiple titles on the timeline at once
on Mar 21, 2018 at 4:42:40 am

Hi everyone, I've used Creative COW numerous times to resolve issues and learn new tricks. This has been a fantastic resource. Thank you. Hoping the community will be able to solve this one.

There's 2 parts to this:
1. I've a project in FCPX that has a lot of titles, subtitles to be exact, and I'd like to change the type of title to all of them. I'm not talking about title attributes here but the actual title itself from the installed titles. I can change 1 on the timeline easily by selecting and then double-clicking the new title. The title is replaced on the timeline with timing intact. But how do I change all of my subtitles to the new title?

2. When I use this method to replace a title in the timeline, the name of the title in the Index changes to the name of the new title instead of the text in the subtitle itself so that the title text is no longer searchable in the Index or using the find and replace function.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

If you just want to change the text there is a find and replace title text under edit menu.

Thanks Brett - I want to swap out the whole title generator (terminology?) so for example replace the current "subtitle" title generator with the "basic lower thirds" title generator. It's easy to do one but I want to swap out the entire project in a couple of clicks.
I've used spherico's title importer (which is awesome) to bring everything in but I want to use a title generator specific to a client's spec.

Any ideas?

You pretty much have to redo them all. When you replace one template with another, it generally will retain the text, but not the line spacing, color, and at her details.

In the future, if you make your own template, or a derivative of an FCPX one, then to change all the templates at once, you’d just edit the one template in Motion, then reboot FCPX and they’d all change automatically.

Great thanks Brett, I should have thought of that. I'll try adjusting in motion. Ideally, I should have the finalised the template before I imported everything. Next time!
Thanks again for the tip.

If you’re using an Apple template you can’t change or edit it. It would screw up all your other projects if you could.

Yes, good point. It's a Spherico template and I've not used it before so I should be okay.

Hi Dave,

As I am the creator of the tool you used, here some tips.

If you want to swap one effect to another:
1st) create a sequence with the new title (all settings done here) and export as XML
2nd) in XTI deselect the "Use Template"
3rd) in XTI select "Template" for all conversion options except style - set it to "Source"
4th) choose "Open.." and select the above XML, then select the file with the titles.

Brett's tip using Motion would affect all titles ever done with the template and only works if you don't change the amount of text entries.
