I have some imported clips in FCP X. I want to rename them but I want the renaming to also impact them at the root level (in the original media folder). Is there a way to do that? I've looked online and haven't seen anything. There must be a way to do it as opposed to renaming in the program and then going to the file and renaming it in Finder. Anyone have a clue?
Not that I know of. It’s just a part of the workflow that you need to rename the files before import.
Renaming the files at the finder level is always going to mean having to re-import into FCPX as the renaming you do inside the app is virtual - so if you bring in a file from the finder called ClipA and rename it in X to MyClip, FCPX is still connecting that to a file in the finder called ClipA. If you rename it in the finder to MyClip, FCPX will still be looking for ClipA in the finder and you’ll have a missing file, with no way to relink it other than to re-import.
I guess there’s a possibility that an app may may exist to do that via XML but I personally would be very upset if I renamed a file inside FCPX and it changed them in the finder too - any media shared across multiple libraries would suddenly become unlinked and it’d be a nightmare.
