FCPX v10.4 - Best way to create .srt files
on Dec 27, 2017 at 5:46:27 am

to post a video to Amazon I'm required to create an .srt file of the dialogue. What do people recommend as the best method/tool to achieve this? Many thanks for your help

As always, define 'best'.
It highly depends on the amount you have to do, the quality you're after, the time you want to spend on learning (as subtitling is an art by itself).
Of course I recommend this:

But that might have something to do with the fact that I wrote it ☺
Note, it has a learning curve, but once you've set it up to your liking and grasp the concept, it's lightning fast.

I totally agree with everything Bouke said.

Another question:
Do you have the dialogs as titles in FCPX?
In this case you can use my X-Title Extractor to convert those to .srt

A third option (in case dialogue is English) is to use Speedscriber.com.

Hi Andreas,

Many thanks for your quick feedback.

I don't have subtitles in the current footage which is 6 x 30-minute episodes.
However, this maybe 1-way to go and then use X-Title extractor - yes agreed.
The language is English.
I'll take a look at speedscriber also.
I also see that there is a product called 'SRT Edit Pro for Mac OS'

All the best

Gary

Hi Bourke,

Many thanks for your quick reply.
By best I meant most efficient - least time consumed to get the best results.
Disappointing that FCPX doesn't have an output to SRT via Compressor or something...
I was wondering if there had become an industry standard product that was ahead of the others in this area.
As it seems to me that this is a fairly basic and stock requirement.
However, it seems this is not the case.
The amount to do is 6 x 30-minute episodes - which i think is quite a lot of work!

I'll take a look at your own solution.

Many thanks again
Gary

Hi All,

Thank You for your help and support.
To let you know that I've purchased 'SRT Edit Pro' from the Apple store at HK$78
It's working well for me.

Best Regards,
Gary

I ran into the same problem. The quickest solution I found was to upload my video to as a private video to youtube. Youtube has an auto closed captioning function. I let it transcribe my video. I than downloaded the timecode texted transcription of my film and edited any mistakes or timing issues it made in Text Edit on the Mac. Once done, I changed the extension to srt and uploaded to Amazon and there it is, my film is on Amazon Prime with a closed caption as requested by them.

Here's a pdf I created: 12015_4waystoaddsubtitlestoyoutubevideoswikihow.pdf.zip

I use SpeedScriber. It works well and creates an SRT file from SpeedScriber.
