issius with luts
on Nov 26, 2017 at 2:25:50 am

Hello,

i am making a music video. i extracted out of the clips the pictures of the different scenes. i am using lightroom 6 for creating the luts.
My problem is that, my edited picture in lightroom looks nice but the lut that i puted on the same clip looks much darker and different.

for me it makes no sense that i create my clip in lightroom and when i am using the lut for the scene that it looks complete different.

i will put a picture of my lightroom and than a picture how it looks in fcpx.

i really dont know what to do and i am very thankfull for any help.

How are you exporting the LUTs out of Lightroom and what kinda of adjustments are you making?

I am exporting with John R. Ellis and I also tried with Lut generator.

i also switcht to 3 diffrent lut import programs in fcpx.

i am only changing the basic, tone curve, hsl and splittoning. the rest is disabeled.

i also tried diffrent colormodes, but only smal changes.

In 5 days i have to buy fcpx, till now i am using the trial, but there should be no problem or ?

Not all settings translate to a LUT. Not sure what splittoning is, maybe that’s it?

Do you have any other “Log Processing” enabled in FCPX?

What color space is the original footage?

Have you double checked the color space override or log processing settings in the inspector?

Open the inspector, client the "info" button, choose "Settings" from the dropdown and look at what the settings are.

Here's a picture:

OK. So it looks like the LUT isn't working in FCPX at all.

Can you please show a picture of the inspector with the LUT effect applied and turned on?

What happens if you completely reset the LUT effect, and ad the LUT? It looks like you have some settings there that may be reducing the effect of the LUT.

Also, you would have to go through every step of the Lightroom exporting process.

There is some setting somewhere that is not getting translated or included.

What is the format of your photo in Lightroom? If it is RAW, then convert it to JPEG orTIFF and then apply correction to that before exporting a LUT.

It is hard to diagnose the problem as it seems that at some point, you have two LUTs on, and others, you have settings enabled in the LUT filter that will alter the look of the LUT ("Intensity" etc).

Is it possible to upload the original TIFF and LUT so I can see what it looks like here?

Thanks so much this helps.

When I go to export a LUT, it says that there are certain settings that won't be transferred to the LUT, which is why you aren't getting the expected result in FCPX.

See here:

If you turn those two parameters off, and use the Tone Curve to get a similar look, you will get a direct LUT transfer from Lightroom.

[Vegdo Rjabkov] "thanks alot 😃 but why they dont transfer the highlights and the shadows into the lut ?"

It must be the way the data is expressed in the "Basic" section and what can be achieved in a point based LUT.

The "Tone Map" area has similar controls, and are probably easily mapped to a plot.

You should contact the LUT exporter developer and see if they have any insight.

LUTs are not definitive. They are usually a starting point to get footage within the realm of the same look between on set, edit, final grade, and output. Most of the time, they carry grade intention, more so than grade instruction.

No problem.

Thanks for sending over all the materials. It helps to be able to see what is going wrong exactly.
