Final Cut Pro X 10.34
on Oct 11, 2017 at 1:11:20 am

I am starting a new project in FCPX and load 40 GB of files. Soon after that I run out of room on my HD and see that it has loaded my HD with a folder (Untitled) with 99.65 GB ..... Does anyone know what is happening. The settings on FCPX is set to leave files in place. Thanks in advance for any help. Dawson https://www.youtube.com/user/chebliss/videos

Do you have “create optimized media” checked?

What kind of media are importing?

Are you making multicam clips?

I did not have Create Optimize Media ticked but I am importing single cam .mov files.

Can you show screengrabs of the Untitled folder?

After ticking optimised media and deleting all files and then re importing the same folder of files , some 40 Gb the 'UNTITLED FOLDER ' had under a GB in it but now its up to 98GB and I have done nothing with the Project but its up to 98 GB in an hour or so ... not sure how to post Screen Grab onto here?

Drag the picture in to the text box.

[Dawson Bliss] "After ticking optimised media "

So you are creating optimized media?

If so, that’s probably your problem.

No I wasn't and someone suggested to tick that box and the problem continues after deleting the files starting a new project and importing the same original 40 GB folder ... the untitled folder reappeared and is 90 GB

Now the untitled folder has increased to 117 GB and I have not been working on the Project

Ok, that’s a library, not a folder.

My guess is that background rendering is on, final cut is rendering your timeline, and your render cache is in the library, making it larger.

Ok changed that & it looks like that was the problem, but where else and how can I put Render files onto say an external HD.

You have to modify the cache settings in fcpx.

Select the Library in the FCPX Browser and Open the inspector. You will see a button
to modify cache position.

Not sure what happened but now there is a hidden file somewhere that has taken over 100Gb and it can only be from FCPX ... any suggestions

From 2011 till today, whenever a strange file/folder shows up in my system due to ingest from FCPX, I just toss it out.
I rarely use Optimized/Proxies and always use Leave files in place.
However, some odd formats tend to make FCPX act oddly.
I was strictly RED eco for years until this year.
Started getting projects from different cameras.

When I have trouble finding large files or folders I use
OmniDiskSweeper to be able to see all the folders in order of size.

Very smart for video files.
