Copy and paste clips without audio
on Jul 5, 2017 at 6:02:27 pm

Hi there.

I'm on FCP X 10.3.3, and I'm trying to copy and paste video clips from one project into another without pasting the audio.

Is there a way to do that without having to detach the audio and deleting it?

Also, is there a way to delete a clip and close the gap at the same time? Similar to shift-delete in FCP 7?

Press delete. It's just reversed because you're in ripple mode as the norm.

You really don't want to do a lot of detaching audio anyway as there is no way to know if you've knocked it out of sync like in legacy. If you don't want audio, the proper (and quicker) way to do it is to simply turn off the audio in the inspector. You can do it for multiple clips at once. So just paste them, then turn off their audio.

Thanks for your help Bret. But what I did was create several timelines with different types of shots, and I'm copying and pasting them into my current first cut project timeline. I'm not using the magnetic timeline, but copying all clips to the track above that timeline. Just razor blading a clip and hitting delete does not close the gap. Thoughts?

Also, while copying and pasting the clips into my first cut timeline, it copies the audio also. The audio is just background noise of my crew talking to each other. So I don't want it these. I'm cutting to a voice track and music track already laid in. How can I easily get rid of that background audio

Highlight all the clips, go to inspector and uncheck the audio to turn it off.

Highlight all the "connected" clips and place them in a secondary storyline by pressing cmd-g to enable ripple outside of the primary. Connected clips are connected to their counterparts in the primary and only move with their connected primary clips. Clips in a secondary work just like the primary; always in ripple mode. For future use: The secondary is only connected to the primary at one spot. You can change that spot by command option clicking the "container" frame around the secondary where you want the connection to be. You can do the same on connected clips.
