Updating old lesson files (10.0.3)
on Jun 23, 2017 at 11:27:58 am

I am working on migrating old lesson files from included DVD's (Michael Wohl, et. al., 2012) that shipped with 'Final Cut Pro X Advanced Editing'. The project files and media came on 2 DVD's.

Using a trial version of FCP 10.2 (to provide an update path to FCP 10.3), I was able to update the content from the first DVD, but not the second.

I'm running into this message, when I try running 'Update Projects and Events' - 'Choose a SAN location or folder containing Final Cut Projects and Events to update into a new library. The current selection is not valid. Choose another SAN location or folder'

Is this something to do with the files having originated on DVD? I have managed to move all content onto the desktop, so I thought at that point I would be good to work with the folders and files contained therein. So far, not so. I have seen some references to SAN here on the forums, but it appears to be more to do with networked storage. The Apple help resources are cryptic for non-engineering types.

The app needs to see those projects/event in the right place and in folders named Final Cut Projects and Final Cut Events, respectively. Those two folders should be at the root level of an external (non boot) drive and/or in your Home Movies folder on your boot drive.

Thanks Noah! Does SAN refer in some way to an internal path that the system defaults to (file management, etc)?

Not sure why it uses that term specifically.

To everyone : if you happen to have 'Final Cut Pro X Advanced Editing' from 2012 (Apple Pro Training Series) and would like the associated exercise files updated to FCP 10.3.4, let me know, and I will post them for download). It will save you some work migrating them through versions of FCP)
