Pink Noise coming in around -9 on FCPX - Hoping someone can clarify how to calibrate speaker volume.

Hi all,

I'm trying to calibrate my speakers for editing in FCPX and Adobe Audition. So I brought in a sound sample of some pink noise that I believe was supposed to be at -20. I downloaded from http://www.audiocheck.net/testtones_pinknoise.php . It's playing at about -9 in both FCPX and Audition on the meters.

So I'm wondering if the meters are on a different scale (db, dbfs...), but most importantly how do I calibrate my speaker volume settings? (My goal was once I had the Pink Noise coming in at -20 on the meters, I would then adjust the speakers to around 79-85 dbSPL using a SPL meter.)

Thanks,
Matt

Seems I may have figured it out. By going to Effects>Audio>Specialized>Multimeter and then clicking icon to show meter, you can see the sound levels playing both at RMS levels and the Peak Levels. The RMS is indeed pegged almost right at -20 and the Peak is around -9. So I guess the FCPX meter is a Peak meter, which makes sense for editing. Problem solved.

By chance, anyone know where in Adobe Audition you can pull up a Multimeter (or RMS meter)? (Looked at Window>Amplitude but that RMS reading didn't seem to peg it at -20.)

Thanks,
Matt

Matt, Where are you finding this? There is no Effects menu at the top of FCP X. What is your starting point to find this menu? I searched the Preferences and there is no Effects tab there either. I had no idea the FCP X has an RMS meter but I'm curious to find it. 😉

It's the Effects Browser.

He's not referencing a menu path, but the Effects Browser path.

Oh I see... wow, I didn't know that meter was there. Very nice. Thanks Jeremy!
