FCP X A/V output : sdi monitor and hdmi output of the macpro
on Mar 30, 2017 at 1:28:27 pm

Hi
I need to use my hd monitor in FCPX playback function through the HDMI output of a MacPro (late 2013)
My monitor (JVC DT-V24L3D) has two inputs (dvi and sdi)
I tried to connect it with hdmi-dvi adapter but it was not recognized as an external monitor (av output remained dimmed in FCPX) I could only use it as a second monitor.
Would it work correctly if I use an HDMI SDI converter ? (I want to be sure of that because the converters are expansive).
Thank you for your help.
Philippe

I believe the Blackmagic converter should work, but the driver is currently not playing nice with FCPX 10.3.x, crashing constantly. I leave the A/V Output off most of the time while editing and just turn it on for playback, then off again.
Maybe the AJA stuff is better.

Wait, you probably won't need the BM driver for the converter.

Is the AV Output greyed out in the preferences or the Window menu?

Thank you Helgi. I have non converter just an adapter HDMI/DVI (one of the standards of my video monitor)
The preferencies display for A/V output : no device found
The point is : will a HDMI SDI converter be considered like an A/V device ?

My HDMI monitor is listed in the A/V Output in the preferences along with the Decklink card, so I think FCPX would need to receive some feedback from the device to make it available, which apparently is not the case with your DVI converter.

Try to ask at the Blackmagic or AJA forum.

I used to do what you're trying to do with a 2006 Mac Pro with an updated gfx card that had an HDMI out. I hooked it up to a Flanders scientific DVI input via an HDMI cable and then a HDMI>DVI adapter on the back of the monitor. If that worked I can't believe that your HDMI>DVI cable won't. But perhaps you need the full cable. It's probably missing pins right off the bat because it doesn't need them so your MacBook might see it as a DVI connection.

That said, I can hook up my Dell monitor to my 2012 iMac via a miniDP (iMac end) to HDMI (Dell end) cable and FCPX sees that as a possible monitor source.

Eventualy I found the point
My HDMI DVI cable was good but I read somewhere we have to setup the good frequence and format of the external monitor from the computer preferencies (here 1080 25p)
That I did and the monitor became identified as A/V device by FCP X
and now that works
thank you for your help
Philippe
