Globally change text parameters
on Mar 14, 2017 at 7:47:00 pm

I have a short video with a dozen or so lower third type graphics. I used a standard text template from the FCPX title generator list . I'd like to globally change the background color for all graphics which I thought I could do by selecting all in the time line index and then mess with the background color in the inspector but that doesn't seem to work. Is there some I can change all text backgrounds in one easy step rather than messing with them all individually? My goal is to try out a few different color backgrounds quickly and then pick the best one.

You could try replacing the graphic in the Finder but I'd keep a backup copy in case that goes south.

It depends on the template and the published parameters.
In case background color is published you should be able to change it for all subtitles.
In case not you have to open a copy in Motion and make the parameter available.
In case that doesn't work post a bug or feature request.

The parameters for the text back grounds are published so I naturally thought I would be able to make a global change but so far it seems I can't do that. The behaviour of the graphics when making changes to groups of lower thirds in the inspector seems a bit unpredictable at this point . It could be just my ignorance of how things work versus how I think they should work. I'll give it another shot today.

What effect do you use?

I'm using the soft bar preset. What I see happening in the case where I select several lower thirds and want to effect a change in the soft bar background, I can select the as many lower thirds as I want, the inspector will reflect that i am inspecting 3 items, then I make a change in the text background and go back to the time line to check the results and only one lower third of the 3 will reflect the change, with the others remaining unchanged.

I tried using a different lower third generator from the fcpx library with the same result- attempting to make a global background change across all lower thirds with the inspector doesn't work. it will only change the background on one lower third. This is sort of annoying....

I'll give it a try over the weekend.

I appreciate you taking the time to give the situation a look. What I am trying to do "should " work only it doesn't so far for me .

Andreas-

Did you get a chance to take a look at the problem I am trying to solve?

I thought you could do that with a compound clip? If that compound clip is other places in the timeline, making changes to one will change all.

Brian-

You may not understand the situation fully--I have about 10 lower thirds in a small project that were based on a stock text FCPX template. text background parameters are published with that template.

What I want to do is select instances of the text template in the time line index , which when I do, I see in the browser as x amount of items selected. I do see the text template background color as active and can change the color. When i do change the text background color, only one lower third background changes and the remaining text backgrounds are unchanged.
No compound clips are involved in this at all.

Mark,

You're right.
I've never been in a situation like that, so I don't know whether it has been like that since day one.
You should file at least a feature request.

in the meantime: to speed up your job to change multiple clip colors create a custom palette.

Yes, I understood your issue. Just trying to think of a better way to do it without to much trouble. Of course I think of it after the fact sometimes on my projects. For this situation I would have created a compound clip with just the colored bar and then add the individual text later for each one. If I change my mind on the color, I can do it by just changing one compound clip. If the text stays the same for all lower thirds as well, include that in the compound clip.

I filed it as a bug. ;^)

I think you're right- its more of a bug than a feature request.
