Rewrapped C300 clip audio issue
on Feb 28, 2017 at 10:09:04 pm

2013 MacPro with BMD UltraStudio Express connected via Thunderbolt.
C300 clips rewrapped with EditReady into MOV files.
Some were originally spanned and some weren't.
Because they are rewrapped, they are now standalone (combined) a/v movie files outside of the camera folder structure.

When I play through the clip in the event browser I don't hear audio, but I do see the VU meters move. If I edit that clip to the timeline and play it, I hear audio without issue. Other clips, like ProRes files from Alexa or MXF files from another source are fine and I can hear their audio when I play or skim through them in the event browser. The same clips are fine in other apps, like Resolve and Premiere Pro.

Always worth rerunning the exports and confirming audio codec/channel config. Could be a bug or could be an encode FCPX just doesn't like.

There's no problem with the audio config. If I set system audio to go internal or use the display audio, all is good. If I use other media it's fine. This same media on the timeline is fine. Quite frankly I've had a number of problems with the Ultrastudio on Thunderbolt on the trash can Macs with FCPX. Basically if you try to use a shared port, performance is sub-standard. But, ONLY with FCPX.

Oliver -

I used to have a similar problem with an earlier version of FCP. Couldn't ever trace it to specific kinds of source clips.

It was always a clip audio configuration issue. For example, set as dual mono, I'd get meters but no audio playback until I put it in a timeline. Then OK. Weird stuff like that. Then it seemed to go away with an update.

This was with AJA T-Tap on a MacPro, Yosemite, system audio set to play through the T-Tap (and disembedded through the monitor).

Not sure if this is helpful.

I'll try playing with the audio configs tomorrow and let you guys know if that fixes it.

You guys are right. This appears to be an audio configuration issue. The clips are dual mono. If I change the clip to stereo in the event, then I hear the audio. Dual mono - no audio. This appears to be between FCPX and the BMD UltraStudio. If I change my output audio to the display, it's fine either way. If I try the same clips at home, where I use a Presonus box for audio, it's also fine. Of course, camera clips should be dual mono, not stereo. Oh well. Thanks.
