Exporting MXF IMX50 in 16:9FHA
on Feb 8, 2017 at 9:18:22 am

Hey guys!

Recently I've been alerted by the broadcaster I'm currently creating content for, that my MXF files have been sent with the wrong
aspect ratio. They require me to send the file with these specifications:

Wrapper - MXF OP-1a
Codec - IMX50
Bit Rate - 50 Mb/s (CBR)
Frame Rate - 25 fps
Aspect Ratio - 16:9FHA

It's all find and dandy BUT with my current FCP installation (Final Cut Pro 10.2.3), it doesn't give me the option to export the files with 16:9 aspect ratio only in 4:3. I edit natively in HD then export to IMX50 files. Any clue how I can edit the MXF settings on FCP or Compressor to alter the AR of the final file?

Thanks!

PS: kind of urgent

HD has to be 16:9. Also why not upgrade to 10.3.2- the MXF support is improved.

Sorry my mistake, I am using 10.3.1

but the client is asking the format in SD not HD and so far FCP doesn't give me the option to export IMX50 in 16:9 just 4:3

Your project should be PAL SD, 720x576 anamorphic, 25p or25i then you can do a share using MXF 4:3 IMX50 compressor setting.

You need to create a compressor setting using these settings:

And then add that compressor setting to your FCPX Share menu and away you go.

Or export an HD movie, and then compress in Compressor using those settings.

[Daniel Cardoso] "Sorry for the newbness"

No worries.

In Compressor, find the MXF settings under Custom > MXF > MXF 25 fps > 625i25 D-10 IMX50:

and the duplicate it and rename it to : 625i25 D-10 IMX50 16:9 FHA or something similar

Choose that duped setting, and hit "configure" in the inspector under the "General" Tab

Set it up like so and hit "ok":

Change the description in the inspector to match the new setting:

Back in FCPX, open the Preferences > Destinations > Add Destinations > Compressor Settings, and drag the "Compressor Settings" Icon over the list on the left. You'll get a dialog like this:

Open the same Custom > MXF directory and find the setting you created in Compressor and hit OK:

The setting is now created and and you will then see that the compressor setting is available in your Share menu. From your timeline, hit Share and choose the new Compressor setting.

Shoot, I'm sorry I forgot the padding section.

Find the geometry tab under "video" and make sure the aspect ratio is et to 4:3 with no padding, no cropping, it should be set for 4x3 and not 16:9 or "preserve source aspect ratio". I'm trying this from memory, I'm not in front of a machine, so you may have to poke around.

This will create the FHA. Y squeezing the 16:9 in to a full 4:3 frame. Then delete the old setting out of your FCPX share menu, and re-add the new setting.

Again, apologies. I forgot the important part! :)

Before all of that, let's make sure it actually works.

I am front of a machine now, and as long as you choose "16:9" in the "aperture" setting, the geometry tab does what it is supposed to.

If they are seeing letterbox, they may not be interpreting the footage correctly.

Every test I have tried, the footage comes in 16:9 (or 1024x576 in a pixel count, but 720x576 FHA in actual pixels).
