Strange framerate bug
on Jan 24, 2017 at 1:59:36 pm

Hi,
I have a strange bug where a clip is generating one duplicate frame every second and the audio is streched the same. If I "reveal in browser" and "connect to storyline" I have a shorter correct clip.
These are the settings:
- 25 fps ProresHQ clip
- 25 fps ProresHQ timeline
- Speed is normal/100%

Have other people run into this problem as well and is there an easy way to detect or prevent it?

John

Reimport and add to a new timeline.

Did you copy and paste this clip from another timeline that wasn't 25fps?

You might be right. There is something really buggy going on there.
If I drop a 25fps clip in a 24fps timeline it streches by 4%.
Not by conforming or applying automatic speed. But by dropping a frame and than doubling it.
The weird thing is if I apply "automatic speed" it streches another 4% and now there are two doubled frames in a second.

I still can not replicate my original bug, because if I paste this 100%-speed-yet-streched clip in a 25fps timeline it now goes back to normal.

To me this is a serious bug. If FCP X degrades the quality of footage in a minimal way, than it is not a reliable tool I can trust. I hope Apple will fix it in an update soon and will conform this, because I think I will use FCPx less for the moment.

This type of bug has been around for as long as I can recall.

The easy fix is to hit shift-f, then option-r which will match the range from the timeline to the browser, and then replace the browser clip in the timeline from start of the range to the end. If you have effects/adjustments on the clip in the timeline, be sure to copy the clip before replacing it so you can paste the attributes back to the incoming clip.

It sound like, though, progress has been made if you can't repeat it.

I would report these findings to Apple and provide examples if you can.

The work around for this problem is to make sure you start a Project in your intended delivery frame rate.
