How can I assign keyboard shortcuts to custom workspace layouts?
Nothing in the help, nothing in the Customize Commands menu....

You can't directly in X as of now. Keyboard Maestro would be a workaround.

If it's a menu item you can assign it in system prefs keyboard shortcuts just for FCP.

As the menu item gets named to whatever you save your workspace as, I'm not able to get OS System Prefs shortcuts to work- I would guess it only functions on app-defined menu items.

However, Keyboard Maestro works like a charm for toggling between custom workspaces in FCPX and will rock every other aspect of your daily Mac computing needs.

Thank you for the answers.

In system prefs it works as app shortcut.
But both methods have the disadvantage of not being able to choose a one button shortcut.
As user of a laptop my space is limited and I find myself often opening the Inspector while closing the Browser {feature request: toggle button}.
This (the custom layouts) kind of works as a toggle between the two, even when it also opens the sidebar, which I now have to close... :

Probably it's a bug, but when I store the layout: Browser (without Sidebar) Viewer Timeline
it opens every single time the Library Sidebar, which I really don't need.

Is it a bug or am I being stupid?

With KM you could build a toggle...

Using keyboard app shortcuts in system prefs I've mapped my "compositing" workspace to F13. That's a single button. But yes regular single button characters are disallowed. Probably because they assume you'd use them for typing and app shortcuts aren't modal.

For Laptop users:
You can gain a little screen estate by opening your .fcpworkspace - file with the Property List Editor (Xcode) and setting the ‘TB Is Shown’ property to 0. Now the toolbar is hidden. If you don’t have Xcode installed you can use the free PlistEdit Pro.

If u’re here you can correct a bug: If you want to see just the Browser in your layout it always opens the Library Sidebar.
That is: the FFEventLibrarySidebarHidden - property is not respected. But if you set the Frame size of the PEMediaEventOrganizerContainerModule to 0 the sidebar is gone! ….and your Workspace is the way you want it to be:)
Happy editing!
