Problem - Second display with OWC Thunderbolt 2 Dock via HDMI
on Apr 7, 2016 at 7:52:33 pm

Hey folks I called OWC which is typically helpful in technical problems, but they had no solution for this.I have a second monitor connected to a 5K iMac via HDMI in built into the OWC thunderbolt 2 dock.

Even though the second display is working with the OS, FCP X does not allow me to show the events or viewers on the second display.

The other thunderbolt port on the dock is taken up by a hard drive so that's why I am using the handy HDMI.

Any ideas folks?

Guessing that's not a config that is supported by X.

Put the hard drive in the OWC and put the monitor back on TBolt.

What computer are you suing? I have an owc2 but haven't tried what you're doing. I can do it tomorrow.

[Tangier Clarke] "Any ideas folks?"

Just tried this out and it works for me.

HDMI to DVI adapter to 2nd (well, third now) monitor.

HDMI out of OWC Dock 2.

Hmmm. The only difference between you and I is you're going HDMI out to DVI. I am going HDMI out of the dock to HDMI into my second monitor which has both HDMI and DVI.

I can't believe that I"d have to get an HDMI to DVI cable for this to work.

Unless FCPX is trying to use your hdmi as video out?

Why not take the hdmi out of your iMac instead of using the dock?

There is no HMDI out of the iMac Retina 5K. That's why I like the dock. It has dedicated HDMI. The thunderbolt ports on the iMac are taken.

Bummer about no HDMI on the 5k.

I am not sure why this wouldn't work except that HDMI has certain hardware handshakes that need to happen for copy protection (HDCP). SO, perhaps, HDCP compliance isn't happening with your monitor, and doesn't work? What monitor is it?

I just tried HDMI out of the dock to HDMI to a Panasonic plasma monitor, and it works just fine. I select to Show Events on second display and the Events are now on the plasma, and if I open the displays sys pref, I even get overscan correction.

I would imagine there is some sort of conflict somewhere. What is hooked up to your Mac?

It would be helpful to know what is daisy chained to each other, and model numbers.

The second monitor is an Acer H236HL BID 23" WIDE LED IPS MONITOR.

Setup is like this:

iMac 5k Retina
Thunderbolt port 1: G-Speed Studio 16TB RAID
Thunderbolt port 2: OWC Thunderbolt 2 Dock

Thunderbolt 2 Dock
Thunderbolt port 1: To iMack 5K Retina
Thunderbolt 2 dock: portable hard drive
HDMI: Acer H236HL BID 23" WIDE LED IPS MONITOR

Like your Panasonic Plasma, I am getting picture on the Acer. I just can't get FCP X to display to it.

Are you trying to use it as a computer monitor, or a video monitor?

Just a second display to place the event browser on. It sounds like the only way to get this to work is use an HDMI to DVI adapter or use one of the dock's thunderbolt ports to go to DVI.

Mine worked with HDMI to HDMI as well.

Is your AV Output on?

There are two things you can try before buying weird hdmi to dvi cables (do those even exist?)

1. In system preferences > display settings > arrangement tab you can set your "main" display by dragging the white bar in the blue squares representing your monitor. First try making your non-hdmi monitor as the main one. Inside fcpx disable a/v output. Try showing events on your hdmi display.

2. If the above doesn't work try in system preferences to set your hdmi display as your main display. Drag the main fcp window to your non hdmi screen. Try showing events on your hdmi display.
