Back in the first year of FCPX I heard you cannot run both programs on the same computer.

True or not, can FCPX and Final Cut 7 Studio run on the same computer today? I hope so cause I want to use my mac pro at home now and I need both.

? Whats the verdict?

Thanks!

Larry

Hello Larry,

Yes you can.
I did on my MacBookPro. No worries.
After you get used to FCPX, you may not want to go back to 7.

Larry, that was never really true. Since the beginning, installing FCPX would move FCP Studio apps into a separate folder in the applications folder, but they would still operate. IIRC, it would sometimes cause an alias malfunction for the moved apps, and there was always the issue where drivers for 3rd party hardware like AJA and Blackmagic cards could have problems when running both systems.

The easiest/safest solve for all that is simply to create a boot drive with an older version of OSX on it and install only FCP7 there. Then on my main boot drive, I keep my modern apps. Because FCP7 is falling farther and farther behind the modern world of codecs and camera formats and it performs worse on each successive OS update. Best to keep a locked down boot drive setup for FCP7.

Im always cautious about running them both on the same computer. I find I have many more mysterious slow downs and weird happenings when they're co-existing. My first choice would be to do as Andy said and install on a seperate partition.

I can't remember the exact details but support for legacy FCP Studio has actually gotten a little better in recent years. I know issues that DVD Studio Pro has had since Lion were fixed in Yosemite.
