FCP X crashes in Multiclip mode.
on Dec 25, 2015 at 2:45:44 pm

Hi,

I have 2 cameras, both with Audio, both shot DSLR. I also have an H4N Audio file.

I used plural eyes to sin them up so I could use the Multi clip function in FCP X.I go through the footage first in Multicam, and everything is fine. After It's done and I go into and tweet it little, that's when FCP X 10.1 crashes. The screen goes disappears. I open it again, try to change it a little, and it crashed again.

Why does it keep crashing?

I have no idea why it's crashing for you but my thoughts are...

1. Try letting FCPX create the multi clip and see what happens. pluraleyes is great but fcpx's internal sync is just as good and maybe there's an issue with the multicam pluraleyes is generating.

2. Maybe your install of FCPX is broken. Try reinstalling it and see if that helps.

3. when you say the screen disappears, what is happening exactly? Are we talking FCPX crashing or the whole of OSX going away?

Anyway, it's hard to remotely diagnose individual crashes but the general procedure (in order of pain level) would be a) trash preferences, b)log in as different user and try it there to see if it's something corrupted in your user folder, c) remove/disable/stop using any third party apps and plugins that might relate to the crash, and d) delete FCPX, reboot, reinstall FCPX.

If none of those work then your problem is either OSX or hardware related.

Hi,

I have tried using the Multicam Sync in FCP X, but it's either really slow, or I am doing something wrong. Here is what I have been doing:

1) First I put my Main Camera footage in the timeline.
2) Then I put my 2nd camera footage above the main camera footage in the timeline.
3) I then put my H4N Audio file on the bottom, below my main camera Audio & Video.
4)Then I make a folder or event, drag those same clips from the browser to that folder.
5) Then I Have FCP Sync it up.

Is this right? If not, how should I do it.

Thanks

Import the clips into an event. Use the info panel to set the metadata for the clip angle if it's not already done. If the angles are continuous clips, then you can add a marker at roughly the same spot at the start each angle to give FCPX a hint about where to start. That will speed things up a lot but for the most part, it's pretty quick anyway.

Select all the clips to be synced and get FCPX to create the multiclip. FCPX will do the rest.

Once the multiclip sync is done, open the clip in the angle editor and rearrange the clips into whatever order you want them to be in. Occasionally, if the audio on an angle was really bad, I've had to tweak things a little in the angle editor, and very occasionally I've had to sync the angles one at a time using the drop down inside the angle editor itself but that's pretty rare.

That's all there is to it.

Hi,

Since my FCP X 10. 2 kept crashing when in Multiclip Mode, I switched to a new user Temporarily, opens up FCP and everything worked fine. It did not crash.

When I back to the main user (Me) it crashes again.

So how can I fix it? If I delete Preferences, will I lose my keyboard shortcuts? Is there a file that is stored on one of my hard drives where I can just put it back in after I trash Preferences (Like in FCP 7)?

Or should I un-install and then re-install the program? (That is what I want to do the least)

Thanks

You can export / import your custom command sets. I'm out of the office for the holiday season so I don't have a copy of FCPX with me to check but Final Cut Pro > Commands > Export, from memory.

And yes, resetting preferences or reinstalling FCPX will reset you back to defaults on everything.

If FCPX is working under another user account, then fingers crossed a preferences reset will work. If not then uninstall FCPX, reboot (important) and reinstall. If that fails then backup & delete your current user account and create a new one because the issue will be with OS X rather than FCPX itself and the half hour it takes to delete and recreate your user account will be way shorter than the time you could spend trying to debug that.

Missed that.

It usually pays to keep your OSX version and FCPX version in sync so as to avoid any potential weird stuff happening... you should ideally be running FCPX 10.1 on a Mavericks system, or maybe Yosemite for the later 10.1.x versions.

So, in addition to my list of diagnostic steps above, insert "is this the latest version of FCPX?" as the first question to ask.

"After It's done and I go into and tweet it little, that's when FCP X 10.1 crashes."

You can edit your original post and I'll delete mine.

I have had FC crash on me when I think its trying to work with a corrupted file. Never seen this until Yosemite and FC 10.2. Debating if I should update the OS.

There was a file that when I tried to import it not only would FC crash but the Mac would shut down and reboot. I have had this behavior with a bunch of thunderbolt raids but in this case it was a particular file and all other libraries worked fine. And this was reproducible and consistent.

I have never heard of a bad file crashing a Mac before. An app yes. Not sure what to make of it.

When you experience an unusual problem and this problem does not happen when working with a new user account:

- you may have conflicting or outdated third-party plugins
- or you may have a corrupted user directory

As a corrupted user directory is very easy to repair, that's what I would try first:

Hi,

I tried rebuilding my user directory, but when I get to the part that I have to delete my original (bad) admin user profile, it does not give me the option to press the - sign to delete it.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

If I do do this, I will not lose anything right? This will basically make a new user out of my old admin one and save all of my software.

It will be like if I took a temporary one, and made it my admin one and deleted my old admin one, correct?

Thanks
