Rebuilding an FCP X project
on Nov 17, 2015 at 6:25:17 pm

So after a year of hearing nothing, a client finally got back to me about a job we effectively finished yesterday.

The edit was in FCP X - not sure what version but it was one of the versions where it still renamed the clips by date and time.

The rushes were shot on a C300 and archived to Blu ray in the original card structure.

Of course opening up the project means its all empty and the files need relinking but with the above in mind its not all straight forward.

Has anyone got any bright ideas how I can relink this all?

Get all the media on a hard drive, then

File > Import > Reimport from Camera/Archive

Thanks. This didn't seem to work - I'm guessing because I didn't create the camera archives through FCP X. I imported the cards first then backed them up via shot put pro.

I did have a brain wave which was to import the clips into a new "import" FCP X project, putting the media outside the project folder, and then relink the clips in the original project to the new clips.

It seems to work but can only seem to do it clip by clip, not bulk - which is v annoying.

If you drag the encompassing folder of the media to the "Favorites" section of the import window, close the import window, the do File .... Reimport, it should work.

Tried that and it doesn't work :-(

So far the only way I can find that works is by relinking them one at a time.

I have even tried putting each days clips in their own events so there is no conflict of dates and filenames.

Open to any bright ideas.

Do you mind showing a few screen grabs of your original library and what the archived media looks like?

Reimport should work, but it is tricky and not straight forward.

I forgot that I made a video of this. The beginning goes by quickly, but it shows dragging the encompassing folder of the card structure to favorites.

See if this helps.

Jeremy.

Many thanks for your help. I have tried all you suggested but the reimport from camera/archive option remains stubbornly greyed out.

Here are some pics - I hope they make sense. Can't seem to upload the pics so here's a dropbox link..

Would love any thoughts you have..

Thanks for the pics.

One more favor.

Can you click on one of the offline files and show me the inspector with the 'info' tab selected and the "basic" view chosen?

Hi Jeremy..

Have added the screen grab as requested to the dropbox folder.

Thanks.

So, add all of those "2013......" folders to the favorites, then select one of the offline clips in your browser and choose the "reimport" option.

Also, you should have the XF plugin installed for FCPX.

See if this link works for you, it might not.

Jeremy. Thank you so much for the perseverance.

So here's what happened. In that directory that is is Wrest Park (below the 2013 directories), there are two other directors "Wrest Park 4" and "Wrest Park 5" i.e. cards 4 and 5. These were shot about 4 months after the first batch of cards.

I added all five directories to the side bar as you suggested, with the clips in two separate events "Day 1" and "Day 2". If I go to the Day 1 event the "reimport" option is greyed out. In the Day 2 event its not and all the clips have relinked successfully. Yeh!

In day two the clips all have "Canon XF" in the camera name but in the Day 1 clips, the camera name is the folder number.

If I drag the clips from Day 1 into day 2 it still won't let me relink those files. So there must be an problem with those directories I would guess.

Thanks so much for all that help.
