Filter to Level different types of Audio to -6db

I am editing a wedding and the priest is all over the place when he speaks. He is up one minute and the next he is low.

Is there a filter that either FCP X already has or a 3rd party filter that when applied, will get his levels, or anyone else's levels, to -6db or close to it without it going over?

Also, the music recorded at the reception is the same way. High then Low. The DJ is very loud when he speaks. I am looking for a way to even it out to -6db.

Thanks

Effects / levels / compressor. Play with the settings and set limiter to -6 or whatever you want. Lots of posts about this so search the forum for more.

+1 what John said. Use a compressor filter. Or download "Levellator". It's free and works well

I am trying to use Levellator but it does not seem to work.

I am selecting a clip in the timeline, exporting just the audio to an AIFF file then putting that file into Levellator. This is what I get.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks
