I know FCP X gives you the option of removing silent tracks upon import. Is there any way to do that for clips which are already in the timeline?

you can't remove the channel but you can switch it off in the info panel so it doesn't show when you expand the audio components, etc.

Removing unneeded tracks in the storyline is largely track based thinking. Usually it's bettter on global changes like this to go to the imported clip in the library Event - Open in Timeline - and delete whatever tracks you don't want there (Amend at the database level, not downstream in the Storyline.) It's still not not automatic (that's only possible on import) but if you do it upstream like this, any subsequent use of each clip will be as you set it upstream.

Bill, will it retroactively affect clips in the timeline or only affect subsequent uses?

Subsequent only.

Think of it like imports.

When you "import" a clip to the timeline, it flows in with the metadata that exists for it "at the time" of import.

If you go back and change the source clip, it just changes the NEXT time you import it into a new storyline.
