Sudden audio increase after cuts on timeline FCPX

The clip shows my selects on the timeline from interviews. As I am playing through the timeline, sometimes as it plays from one clip to the next, there will be an immediate increase of volume to absolute maximum at the cut, even though no volume settings have been changed. This has happened on many projects over the last few years and I can't work out why, even after extensive googling.

Here's an example of the problem (apologies for poor iphone footage)

Does anyone know why this happens and a fix? It does my NUT and can get my heart rate up far too high!

Using FCPX 10.0.9
Editing Optimized Quicktimes (From H.264 C100 files)
1920x1080p, 25fps
Timeline 1080i
On MacBook Pro (2012), OSX 10.8.5, 2.9GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3

I can't say. I've come across that particular problem before. Have you tried the usual trashing the preferences, or deleting and reinstalling FCPX?

I know that's the FCPX equivalent of the IT guy saying "have you tried turning the computer of and on again" but it's amazing how often that solves weird problems.
