What kind of files are "Original Media" when importing from an AVCHD card/

What kind of media files are the original files when I import? I'm using AVCHD. I imagine it makes no difference whether I choose optimized or proxy files for this question but maybe I'm wrong. I'm making some short films for fun that I might upload to Youtube. I'm wondering if I can just import and the quality difference won't be big or if I should optimize it even if it's only going on Youtube. I guess I'm not entirely sure what the quality of "original files" is.

The original media will just be the AVCHD files re-wrapped so they're readable. Essentially the same h264. With AVCHD there's really only a need for optimised or proxy media if your computer has playback issues.

The exported files won't be better on export if I choose optimized media for the import?

You may get some benefit when colour grading by moving your footage to ProRes to take advantage of the wider colour space but nothing is going to make it any better quality than it was when it was shot. Just edit it, and use FCPX's upload to YouTube preset to get the end result online.

So, if I have now original files and optimized ones, what's the best way to delete the optimized ones without disconnecting the clips in the library?

I'm using Final Cut Library Manager by arcticwhiteness.com. A sweet media management tool with plenty of features.

Ha! I made a note to post here later this week asking people's opinion of that software. You'd recommend it?

They have a trial, so test it out. Just go through their website training and you are good to go. Very easy to use.
