10.2 ProRes export issues with AJA KiPro
on Apr 15, 2015 at 12:25:46 am

Audio no longer plays on KiPro from Prores files exported from FCPX latest update 10.2.

Have tried with KiPro Rack running latest firmware.

If anyone else out there has a KiPro and FCPX with the just released update please try as well.
To get audio to work I had to throw the files into Adobe Media Encoder (CS6) and re-encode to ProRes.

[Colin McQuillan] "Audio no longer plays on KiPro from Prores files exported from FCPX latest update 10.2."

So with the update did you bother to check the settings to make sure that the audio compression is set correctly?

What are the settings you are using?

if your master audio is not 48kz that might be where the problem started.

I think it also has to be dual mono and not stereo, but that may have changed.

I've been outputting prores files from FCP and FCPX for KiPro playout for many years and have never had to specify dual mono or stereo before.

When I re-encoded the files I exported from FCPX in Adobe Media Encoder (CS6) audio was set to stereo and the KiPro was able to playout the file just fine.

The file format on the Kipro needs to be grouped as DUAL MONO.

And while those might be your intended settings, did you actually check the file in another application to confirm?

Look anytime you do a upgrade you run the chance of settings being modified or deleted completely.

The setting according to AJA are

If you are working in Final Cut Pro with an Apple ProRes sequence, you should take
note to review the Final Cut Pro Sequence Settings, and within the General tab, the
Audio Settings should be con"gured for:
Rate: 48 kHz
Depth: 24-bit
Con!g: Channel Grouped
(Apple-provided Apple ProRes Sequence Settings may default to 16-bit audio and the Ki Pro
and Ki Pro Mini only accept 48kHz 24-bit audio, not 16-bit)

and the note says NOTHING about stereo audio

Yes, Jeremy mentioned he thought it may have to be dual mono, not stereo. Was simply saying that stereo works just fine..

All of my settings in FCPX are correct.

Since I updated today to 10.2 the Prores files I export from FCPX no longer play audio when playing out on a KiPro Rack..

The only thing that has changed in my workflow is updating FCPX.. sequence settings are exactly the same as before using 10.1.x. Yesterday I exported files from 10.1.x and they played perfectly fine on the same KiPro Rack.

I took the files I exported from FCPX that won't play audio on the kipro, re-encoded them usind Media Encoder, and the resulting files played back no problem.

This leads me to believe the issue is with the FCPX update and how it is encoding to ProRes.

Yes, that may have changed.

I'll try and see if I can reproduce this. I haven't tried since 10.2

That would be great - would love to know if it is just a local issue I'm having here, or a broader issue with the FCP update...

Everything today was 1080i60 48khz ProRes HQ. I'll also try the other prores flavours and other frame sizes as well when I'm back in the truck tomorrow.

For now I'll have to run all my exports through Media Encoder before loading onto the KiPro drive...

I'm having trouble as well. I would contact AJA if you haven't already.

I don't have Racks, though, just the regular ole KiPro.

Tried a couple of the other flavours of prores today at the truck and audio was not working with anything I was exporting from FCPX 10.2
When I inspect the file the audio listed as 24bit/48khz....

I had to re-encode every file through Media Encoder in order for audio to playback on the KiPro.

Haven't tried exporting with Compressor, or re-encoding the files with Compressor yet. Might try that later and see if there is the same issue with the latest Compressor version as well...

I let AJA support know yesterday, so they are aware.

Having the same issue here in STL. Exporting ProRes422 with same workflow as before update.

File plays in QT Player, but not when transferred to KiPro.

I posted my details in a new post.

Make sure you are exporting 24bit audio tracks. KiPro won't playback 16bit files.

I won't waste any time here. A client was having the same issue with the audio since the FCPX update. I spent some time on the phone with AJA and it seems they have been hearing from a lot of people about this and have developed a work around. While it isn't a permanent fix (which hopefully FCP will take note of), it seems to have flawlessly solved the issue for my client and didn't take long at all. I have uploaded a PDF which was sent to me via AJA tech support. Hopefully this helps you guys.

Thanks for that. My workaround was to export using Compressor, making sure audio is 24bit/48khz, which still works without issue.
