Delay in pressing play and start of material on TL
on Feb 26, 2015 at 10:13:26 am

Hi,

I have following problems: With certain Time Lines, I have following issue: the time in between pressing space bar/Play and the footage actually playing is up to 2 seconds. Put that only applies to certain Projects and even then it seems to be different inside the project itself. The issue is not connected to SD/HD nor if the file was rendered or not.
No idea why this happens.

Any thoughts?

Greetings,

Let me guess: footage is not optimized?

All optimised - original footage comes from SONY A7s, FS700 & Canon C100.

Turn off any unused (or empty) audio channels on your footage.

I've had this happen from time to time too. In fact it's just started up again in the last week or so.

The only thing I've found that seems to fix it, at least for a while is a clean install of my machine - which makes me think it's an FCPX/OSX issue rather than anything to do with the media or libraries.

Are you using anything Blackmagic Design for monitoring? I've also wondered if it has something to do with the driver for my Blackmagic Ultrastudio Mini Monitor. Haven't had a spare minute to investigate thougH.

try turning AV-display off, if you have a BM card and see what happens.
usually this helps on our 2013 mac pro with a decklink
on an older 2008 Mac Pro with an aja card the same timeline plays just fine
it´s the deck links driver - my2cents

That was my first thought as well, since I use BM. but even if I have AV output set to off, no monitoring, it still does it.
Besides if it's the Driver, it wouldn't make sense that with some clips on the TL I get a delay and with others not.

Have you tried hitting ctrl-⌘-1 and closing any open browsers and the inspector?

Then I personally would surmise that it's not in fact an FCP issue and a fresh install of the OS is your best if not only bet, before you go on a week long witch-hunt, and nip matters in the bud. Little sense in running circles around the problem. ;)

Sounds like the right thing to do, but after I finish this project.
A clean re install of all is too time consuming and something I don't do in a running project.
After it's done, yes, seems the best option.

Time? Yes. I recently had to do it myself and it took about 20 mins. (download time for the installer not included). But as far as FCP is concerned, if you're moving back to the same version and you remember any plugins or custom Motion work, then I don't see anything to be worried about. But that's obviously for you to decide.

Hold on, you are talking about FCPX or the entire system? I assumed you meant the second.

The OS, yes. As in "format disk and reinstall".

You manage a full re install, with installing all apps and preferences from scratch, all plug ins, All settings, import all data e.g. For mail, browsers and so on in 20min? Wow, now I'm honestly deeply impressed. I'd be super happy if you'd share that WF with me.

Aside from the fact that I was clearly speaking only of the OS itself, I don't have a bazillion apps that I need IMMEDIATELY, no. But the ones that I need most I can either easily have installing from ONLINE in the background with a few clicks, and all the rest of my needed installers I have on a NAS, yes. Total reinstall, maybe 1 hour... again, 90% in the background. Considering how much time I would have lost if I hadn't reinstalled due to my issues and frustration... completely negligible.

Everything else essential syncs itself from the cloud also. An occasional "oops, forgot that" happens for a few days... so what. YMMV

Wow, that's really quick. I guess, cause I'm not a friend of cloud and very suspicious about it,
A total re install with all and all settings takes me a full day.
But in any case I will do it as soon as this project leaves my doorstep.

How are you installing certain apps WITHOUT the cloud?? Apple?? Adobe??

And as long as APPLE is on the servers front panel, I have ZERO qualms about using it. GOOGLE or certain others on the other hand... nevah evah.

To each his own.

Apple FCPX of course, Adobe I'm still on 6.
And for the rest all apple cloud, nope not really.
Don't wanna be a glass citizen. I am still an analogue type and very cautious. ;-)

Have a great weekend!

Just for the record: Apple has neither the least bit interest in nor gain from any of your data. That's not the business they're in. It's merely there for integration purposes, i.e. to make using a Mac even that much more attractive. Google et al on the other hand...

Good luck!

Something I noticed made the delay go away for me yesterday was resetting the FCPX window layout.

If your apps are in the cloud, a complete reinstall is relatively painless and certainly makes the problem go away, but that's like using an elephant gun on a mouse. There must be a more elegant solution.

That one I did not try yet! Good One. When Shabbes is finished tomorrow, and I am back to the studio, it's the first thing I am gonna try.
Thanx.

[Jeff Kirkland] "but that's like using an elephant gun on a mouse. There must be a more elegant solution."

I'm sure there MAY be, too... in theory. But after too many years of doing this, and doing that, trying this and trashing that, updating this and reinstalling that... to then end up doing what? Yes, reinstalling the whole shaboodle. Ergo: more elegant is only the actual solution, which is clearly useless if don't know what it is.

If the resetting of the windows does it, great! But put another way, this is already day two of him searching. So how could two HOURS (if even) of reinstalling be less elegant? ;)

I'm always happy to do some research and try a couple of things out. But you're right. You have to limit the play. If I need it fixed and nothing else works then it's time to clean install and start again.
