UltraStudio Mini Monitor Stuttering Plaback

Just did the upgrade to Yosemite which meant an update to Blackmagic Desktop Video and an update to the Mini Monitor firmware. Now I'm experiencing stuttering playback for the first few seconds each time I start playback. Wondering if anyone else may be experiencing this? Here's my setup...

Late 2013 MacPro 8core with 32 Gig ram
Dual 700 Fire Pro
FCPX 10.1.4
Black magic Desktop Video 10.3.4
Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Monitor

Thanks,

If you're using FCPX on a pro tube, we ended up putting all our mini monitors in a shoebox and running HDMI from the tube to our TV's. It has the added benefit of working on a 4k monitor and doesn't lag or do weird stuff like this. Just set the 2nd monitor to be an event viewer display.

Hey John,

Thanks for the response, I have been thinking that will be my future solution. If you don't mind sharing, what monitor did you folks decide on for the 4k monitoring?

Thanks again,

Hey Michael,

We got two of those 50 inch Seiki's last year that aren't amazing for color but do a solid job representing 4k when we work in it. An Atomos Spyder helps get them a little closer to the right color.

I recently just got an LG 55 inch and it's great. Also 4k. For serious color we do use a FSI 17" with a black magic mini monitor, but we don't worry too hard about frame accurate playback with it.

I assume the output format and frame rate match the timeline format and frame rate?

Also, try an uninstall and reinstall of the drivers.

Yep, everything is 23.98 and ProRes 422.

And yep, I uninstalled and reinstalled the Blackmagic Desktop Video. Sorry I should have mentioned that.

Thanks for the ideas though!

Mike

I see the same here. 6-Core with dual 700 and a BM mini-monitor.
When you hit play the system hiccups, and you´ll loose some frames. Otherwise the system ist very fast and we have a Promise R6 TB2 Unit for Storage (so it can´t be that).
When we open the same project on a 2006 MacPro with a decent hardware raid = no hiccups.
Ups!

Hi all,

I might be wrong but as far I know video output from build in HDMI on a mac pro or graphics card is limited to 8 bit only. OS limitation.
Mini Monitor is 10 bit.

Best regards,

Ben

Yes, the Mac Pro port is only 8 bit, which doesn't always matter for monitoring.

For what it's worth though, I use the Mini Monitor with a Mac Pro and Yosemite every day and have zero issues.with stuttering and dropped frames.
