LTO-5 or LTO-6 on iMac?
on Jan 6, 2015 at 4:17:42 pm

I have FCPX libraries on more than a dozen external HDDs, and am considering moving to LTO-5 or LTO-6 for archiving so that I can re-use my HDDs for current projects. I have a late 2012 iMac with Thunderbolt 1 and USB 3.0 ports, currently using Mavericks but planning to upgrade to Yosemite.

How do I connect an external LTO drive to this iMac? (I haven't found an external LTO drive with either of these interfaces.)

I'd appreciate your current recommendations for LTO drives, cartridges, software, and techniques for connecting an external LTO drive to an iMac. Also, any "gotchas" or drawbacks.

Should I go for LTO-6 (more expensive), or would LTO-5 be adequate for archiving FCPX libraries and older FCP 7 events, projects, and media?

Thanks,
FastBill

Hi Bill,

Thunderbolt 2 devices are backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 1 systems. There are a number of mechanisms that would provide either LTO-5 or LTO-6 solutions for your needs.

mLogic's mTape is an option as are our (TOLIS Group) Thunderbolt bundles.

Do your research and be sure that you compare what you get for the money that you pay.

Currently looking at this one:

Tandberg Data 8698-RDX

Its USB 3.0.

Since there are no advantages in I/O speeds, Thunderbolt 1 or 2 dont matter.

Or am I wrong?

Tandberg Data's RDX units are disk drives, not a tape drives.

You are correct that TB 2 offers no performance advantage over TB 1 for LTO tape.

Oops yes I should have mentioned that.

I was researching the mTape optiona and someone threw the Tandberg into the mix.

Got me intrigued but your right, its DISK and I fear a single 2TB will not suffice my RED archives :(
