Bad graphic quality after render
on Jan 5, 2015 at 4:17:18 am

Hello,

I am editing some video in FCPX with some graphic overlay (made in AE). They look great in comp and rendered from AME but turn out horrible when viewing and exporting them in FCPX. There seems to be a black shade/outline visible over the text (see example). I'm not sure what's causing the issue.

AE settings:
Comp 1280X720 25fps

AME
720X576i (for DVD) Pro Res 4444 alpha

Thank you.

Check if the alpha is interpreted right (video inspector - info - settings - alpha handling) and set it to the same as in the AE export. IIRC it should be premultiplied but FCPX sometimes interprets it as straight alpha.

Thank you for the reply.

I have gone through the steps but I can't seem to find the 'alpha handling' section. Video inspector shown below.

Thank you.

The settings option is in the drop-down menu at the bottom left of the inspector where you can select the metadata view, in your screenshot it says 'basic'.

The problem here is that ProRes4444 doesn't recognize alpha correctly. You are getting that black because it was most likely rendered with a "Premultiplied" alpha channel. You need to switch it to a "Straight" alpha channel. However if you have done this and rendered to ProRes4444 you will still get that black, because ProRes4444 doesn't recognize the Straight alpha.

So what's the solution? Render to the Lossless codec with "Straight" alpha. You will need to render after import, but the alpha will be correct and the black will be gone.

I used Animation, which seemed to work. Are there any other alpha channels with a "Straight" alpha?

To be honest I am not sure since I have been using Animation. Maybe Avid DNxHD?
