iMac can't see Sonnet Echo ExpressCard Pro with Thunderbolt
on Jan 2, 2015 at 10:42:00 pm

Hello Cow Mates,

I am excited to start the new year with a new 27" 5K iMac and Yosemite OS. I migrated from my 17" MacBookPro laptop to this wonderful iMac with 32 GB of RAM. Everything seems to work (even my legacy FCP 6.01 and DVD Studio Pro) except my new SxS card reader.

My only problem seems to be the fact that my iMac can't see my new Sonnet Echo ExpressCard Pro with Thunderbolt. I have tried downloading the latest and greatest driver from Sonnet, but no joy. I need this to work in order to import my SxS cards.

Any suggestions?

Shoot a note to Sonnet to confirm compatability...

According to the Sonnet web site for the Echo ExpressCard Pro, here are your options:

Mac Compatibility
  • OS X® 10.6.8+
  • OS X Server 10.6.8+
  • OS X Mavericks compatible
It doesn't look like they support Yosemite yet. As Noah said, send them an email to see what their plans are. Maybe they have something in beta you can test for them?

I would also make sure you have any Sony SxS drivers installed, like the UDF driver: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/sxsudfdriver

I don't recall that the Sonnet needs a driver. My Echo II worked just fine when I upgraded my MacBookPro Retina to Yosemite. My ATTO Fiber card ghat I had in the Echo broke (driver not supported in Yosemite), but my Kona 3 worked great.

I have been using the Sonnet SxS Express card TB hardware combo with the various builds of Yosemite on a 1st Gen Retina laptop while OnSet without issue over the last 4 months with out seeing any hardware issues.

I will recommend that both the Sony SxS and UDF drivers be installed for optimal performance.

Hey Gary,

Would you be so kind to share what exact version numbers of the SxS device driver and UDF driver you have installed?

I tried it on a maxed out 1st Gen Retina Macbook on which I'd done a complete wipe of the harddrive and absolutely fresh install of Yosemite over the holidays.

Absolutely everything works great (Resolve 11 seems to be faster still on 10.10).

On my first gig last week however, I was unable to read any Alexa SxS cards (tried with different driver versions and tried on two different Sonnet Echo readers).

I actually got stuck to the point, that my Macbook wouldn't even complete the boot process after I had installed the XQD driver from the Sonnet support site!!

(Luckily I could revive it later by booting in safe mode and removing all of the drivers).

You don't want this to happen on set.

I then worked off of a Mavericks time machine backup which I carried on an external hard drive (thank God!)

I'd be happy for a running combination in Yosemite however.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Okay, I got it to work with the newest drivers, after deleting the old SxS plists

Thanks

Hello Adam,

As I recall, I deleted any old drivers, updated the latest Sonnet driver, powered down my computer, and powered it back up. THEN plugged in the Sonnnet card reader. If that doesn't work, try plugging in the card reader before powering it back up.

Good luck!
