Keying outside of an object in FCPX
on Nov 15, 2014 at 2:35:01 am

Hey guys!

I am having a lot of trouble getting a key right in FCPX, the iphone that this barbie doll is holding has a few green app icons on it and the keyer is keying those out, i DON'T want them keyed out, i want the phone to remain as it is. Any tips on this? Essentially I would like to key everything outside of the main edges of the barbie doll. Also any tips to get rid of the shadows under her dress? Thanks guys! Here is a screenshot of it in FCPX, as you can see there are holes in the phone, i am using FCPX's default keyer

If the shot is static, you can use a mask on a duplicate clip above to just mask the phone face like I did here:

You also need to work on your key because you lost a lot of her hair. It would also be easier if you used a single color green (you have two green backgrounds and the one below the doll is not very solid in color).

The image above was done just with the Keyer and Mask in FCP X.

Hey John, also how did you manage to get rid of most of the green spill on her heels? And yes i agree on the working with one solid green screen cloth, but i was working with what i had.

Sorry last question John, could you go over what you did to get rid of the spill around the heels and her body using the keyer ans mask? thanks my man!

[Jim Kehoe] "could you go over what you did to get rid of the spill around the heels and her body using the keyer ans mask?"
I dropped the Keyer onto the clip. Then I selected Refine Key | Sample Color and drew a rectangle on the preview window under the doll's legs. That cleaned things up with the lower green screen by her legs.

For the mask you need to add the same image above as a connected clip and then use the Mask effect and adjusted the corners to match the edges of the phone face. That will cause the face of the phone from the connected clip be displayed instead of the one from the keyed clip.
