How does FCPX store pictures imported from aperture?
on Sep 22, 2014 at 6:24:53 am

Ok, I imported pictures to aperture, and I saved them on an external drive. What I don`t understand is that I can drag these pictures to FCPX without connecting my drive. How is this possible? When do FCPX requires connection withe "the real media"?

So, when using pictures stored in Aperture, on an external drive, it will only be links to the media, and the media will not take extra space?

Can you please explain?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

Any images you import from the photo browser are (fortunately) copied to your library.

Ok, so pictures used in both Aperture and FCPX will take double Space?

But isn`t it strange that I can copy the pictures without connecting my external drive?

Well, then your FCP library clearly isn't on that disk!

Ok, I`m actually importing from aperture to fcp

Window > Media Browser > Photos > aperture section

When I try to share Pictures from aperture, I have to connect my drive, so my Pictures are stored on the external drive. But, as said, I don`t have to Connect the drive when I move Pictures from aperture section to fcpx. Thats why I`m confused

by the way -
my Library is stored on my internal drive, so I can always browse my Pictures without connecting the external drive.
But as soon as I try to edit them, I have to connect the external drive, where the Pictures are stored.

If you can see a file, whether it's a still or video, then it must be stored on a connected and mounted drive. Otherwise it would be off line. The files could be stored in the library (managed) or on another drive and referenced in the library.
