I cannot "open a copy in motion" mostly if the wipes transitions

I'm trying to personalize and save as a copy one of default transition that I have in the "wipes" group.

But in mostly of them if I right-click on the icon in the transition browser I cannot select "open a copy in motion"

The only transitions I can "open a copy in motion" are "Diagonal" and "Mask"

Do you know why?

Is this normal?

Normal. Some aren't created with motion.

You can certainly recreate most of them in your own way but yeah some of these are not originally Motion projects.

Thanks for the answer!
Make sense but... how you can save a personalized preset of one of this not-motion-transition?

You can copy and past to reuse a personalized transition in the same project... but not way to save it for the future.

Well since you can't personalize it what is there to save? I guess the minor aspects like duration or border, etc? Copy from a past project is all you can do. You could also create a dummy project where you keep all the presets in a sequence. If you're working on a recurring series then that's probably your best bet.

For me every project is different. Every once in a while I want to do a similar effect from a past project so I just pull it up and copy paste. Even in legacy I never really got into favorites. Seems I was trashing prefs so much it was just a hassle.

I believe that some (very few) of the basic ones are in fact still left over Quartz composer transitions (for the sake of compatibility to old 7 projects?). So no, they're not editable in Motion. And no, there is unfortunately no "favoriting" of preset filters and transitions... yet. But if you need a certain length, then you can set that default length in the prefs and make it the standard transition by right-clicking it in the browser. Otherwise you're left with copy/paste.

You could create a Library for you favourite effects and transitions, with projects containing them, applied to generators simulating clips. This way the Library remains very light.

Creating an event that you would export as xml may sound better but because of current fcpxml limitations it would not register all parameters faithfully.

hope this helps

It's time for X to start moving forward in all these areas. They've got the backbone, now they need the niceties and luxuries back. I recently converted over a Premiere project from a client that I converted to X where they had organized all the media into timelines instead of bins. Working from timelines is a hassle in X since you can't open multiple and just drag between them. But I can't drag all the clips into a keyword collection either! If I could just drag these clips backward into a keyword collection where I can actually sort them or view them in filmstrip/thumbnail modes it would make life so much simpler. And just the same, if I could drag effects into some sort of keyword collection or event or project based fx collection it would REALLY be useful.

[Bret Williams] "where they had organized all the media into timelines instead of bins."

:-)))) Oh wow.

[Bret Williams] "Working from timelines is a hassle in X "

Which is why no one in their right mind would ever get the bizarre idea of even trying it. Not exactly sure how that could somehow be laid out as a fault of FCP. That's like someone lamenting about "Driving a car without tires is a huge pain!" :-D

[Bret Williams] "But I can't drag all the clips into a keyword collection either!"

Simply make a new library and drag whatever project you want over. Et violá, all the appertaining footage is in the event. (even all the keywords would copy over... if you had any)

People have been doing this for years. Never understood it. I guess you CUT it from the timeline and paste into the edit. So you know what shots you have left I guess.

Tell me about it. In fact exactly THAT (imho utterly ridiculous habit) is what ticked off loads of people around me about the magnetic timeline. Or should I say, they were miffed that X was showing them what a stupid idea it was and now they finally had to come up with a decent and intelligent workflow. Yeah. Stupid magnetic timeline! Ruining a perfectly lazy workflow! :-D

Well I'm not neccessarily a fan of the magnetic timeline. It's like functioning in ripple / insert mode all the time. But I don't equate tracklessness to the magnetic timeline. I like tracklessness. I've learned to deal with the constant ripple mode.

For me, the magnetic timeline works is the way it should have worked since 1989 when I started. Looking back at what it used to be like is mind-boggling to think I actually worked that way for so long and many NLEs *still* work that way! Stumbled across this a while back and it just made me laugh...

What NLE were you using in 1989? What made you laugh about the Media100 demo? If it wasn't for Media100 I never would've learned After Effects! :) Since Media100 only had 1 track of video you had to use after effects for just about anything.

[Bret Williams] "What NLE were you using in 1989?"

Erm... Avid? Or even go a few years later, circa 1991. Same thing. Name me any NLE that didn't follow the same paradigm.

[Bret Williams] "What made you laugh about the Media100 demo?"

The clip starts at the exact point. The utterly convoluted and (by X standards) ridiculous timeline tango you had (and have) to go through for a simple edit change. For anyone to say that that was (and IS with various other NLEs today) somehow a "better" way of working compared to the magnetic timeline makes me laugh. Heartily, yes.

And why would anyone think that? At best only because of habit, nothing else. The whole "How dare you to tell me to change what I'm used to and had a hard enough time grasping to begin with!" thing.
