Can't load sony F800 xdcam .MXF files into FCPX
on Aug 19, 2014 at 7:27:43 pm

I have a hard drive full of .MXF files that were transferred from a Sony XDCAM F-800 23GB professional Disc reader onto the drive as files.

I ran the installation for both the Canon and Sony plugins
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/download/pdzk-lt2
http://usa.canon.com/cusa/professional/products/professional_cameras/cinema.....

FCPX doesn't read the .MXF files, giving the error "No importable files".
Any suggestions on how to load the .MXF files into FCPX? Thanks!
(PS I tried installing the codecs from here
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1396
and this utility called XDCAM Transfer:
http://macdownload.informer.com/xdcam-transfer/download/
but nothing was appropriate or worked.)

Mac Pro with Mavericks, FCPX 10.1.2,

Do you still have the original card structure?

So all you have are MXF files?

You might need an MXF importer from mxf4mac or calibrated if that's the case.

Thanks! I checked out both products you mentioned. calibrated seems to have extra steps in creating XML files that mx4mac doesn't mention. dDo you (anyone here!) have experience with the two products? Any preference/review?

Thanks again,
Michael

I have used (for years) MXF4mac and love it.

It's not cheap, but it's worth it.

Before you purchase, can you show me a screengrab of your file directory?

I'm not sure an MXF importer is going to help here since the files are op-atom.

I'd download the Sony Content Browser software to rewrap these files to .mov

Jeremy,

Thanks for helping on this! I bought the Sony "Standard Pack" Content Browser for Mac from here:

http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/download/contentbrowser

Jumping right in without reading the docs, I installed it and tried to Import the files (e.g. C0001A01.MXF above) , it burps:

Unsupported Clip.

Opened the Installation Guide, see that it says to open Applications->Utilities->System Information and look under Software->Extensions
to see about drivers, which should be:

If a driver is already installed on your computer, confirm that the following version of the driver or later is installed. You can find the latest versions of drivers on the XDCAM website.
• FAM Driver: Ver. 2.3.3 or later (supposed to show up in Sys Info under [prodisc_fs] but there is none there)
• XDCAM Drive Software: Ver. 5.0.0 or later (Shows up in Sys Info under SonyXDCAMDriver, mine is 3.4.1)
• SxS Device Driver: Ver. 1.1.2.10220 or later
• SxS UDF Driver: Ver. 2.1.1 or later

This page is generally helpful (but shows up under a search on the Sony site as having no name) http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/download/software_for_sony_equipment#xd...

So I installed
FAM Driver (which requires a reboot) from here: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/download/famdriver#download
The SxS UDF Driver (reboot) from here: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/download/sxsudfdriver
I'm still researching how to remove the XDCAMDriver (not sure how it got there) because the installation doc says to remove the old one before installing the new one.

Update soon

Jeremy,

Any idea how to uninstall the existing XDCAM driver? Apple Support doesn't know where it installs...

Thanks!

I think you just need to install the software, and it should rewrite the older one.

If you look in system info, it shows you where the extension is installed, but I wouldn't root around in the extensions folder.

I would try installing all the new software, and see if it works.

Jeremy,

I installed the plugin http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/pdzk-lt2. Then,
I renamed the old driver in the folder and installed the new driver (5.0.1) at your link (note they had different names so perhaps it didn't matter after all)

Then the Content Browser could read the clips, but not export them.
So I rented the disc reader again, and many more files showed up using this new driver, when opening the drive top level folder under the finder:

Once I copied all the files from the discs with the new driver installed, the free MX4Mac player was opening them, but still not FCPX. So I opened them in the Content Browser, where they showed up well. I tried converting one to WMV (the only option it allowed) Once the conversion started, FCPX was able to recognize all the clips!

So all is good now, but I have to re-read all the discs from the external reader onto the HD, run Content Browser on the Clip folder and start converting one clip to WMV and then import all the clips into FCPX.

Interestingly, reading the discs took 4 hours each with the old driver, but only 20 minutes with the new one!

Thanks Again.

Hmm, I'm not sure you need to export.

I think you just need to rewrap.

I don't have any material from a disc, but I know that from SxS, you can simply rewrap to .mov.

Under the Preview menu, there's an "import to Final Cut Pro" option.

Try that.

OK, I just checked an SxS test.

First, go to the prefs in Content Browser, click the FCP tab, select the destination you want the rewrapped movies to go, select Final Cut Pro X from the drop down, and hit OK.

Then, back in content browser, select all the movies in the preview window, right click and choose (import to final cut pro). You will be presented with a dialog box, hit execute.

The movies will be rewrapped to .mov to the location you specified in the prefs.

Open FCPX, and import those movies.

It should work similarly for disc based media.

FCPX seems to be importing the .MXF files now, with the new driver and the plugin installed. Do you thing I should still re-wrap them, or can I just work with them?

This is after you used Content Browser so send to Final Cut Pro?

Or are you using the WMV files? I would not use the wmv files.
