opening 2 year old FCPX project in 10.1.2
on Aug 7, 2014 at 11:57:41 am

I have some projects that I made in July of 2012 in what was then the current version of FCPX. I'm on 10.1.2 now and would like to open some of those projects but 10.1.2 doesn't seem to know what to do with those old 10. something. something projects.

Is there some method I must use to migrate those old projects?

Place the events and projects at the drive root level in Final Cut Events and Final Cut Projects folders. Then from inside FCP X select upgrade projects. Good luck. See my "FCP X Strikes Again" thread in the debate forum. Don't expect everything to translate perfectly.

I highly recommend reading this first: http://www.philiphodgetts.com/2013/12/upgrade-your-events-and-project-to-fc...

I personally haven't had any issues worth mentioning and I've upgraded a very large amount of events/projects/libraries. Some from nearly the first version to just the previous version.

Ditto. Lots of projects and fx and plugins. No problems minus one-

Stuff shot with 5D mkII had TC but original X didn't support/read the TC. Now it does. So when I load a project shot on 5D, It originally read all the clips as starting with 0:00:00:00. But now it reads the media's TC, and so none relink. No way to override that I can tell. Some sort of ignore TC function would be great.

Ditto here. Last week I needed to update a production we did at the Paralympic Games in 2012 (FCP X 10.0.5). Over 3000 clips, 74 projects including CCs, multiclips and whatnot... Not one missing file, everything went perfectly fine except for a custom title template we had created during the editing. The text was still there but the formatting was wong. Then I noticed the custom template was missing on the machine where we did the updating. I copied it over from the original templates folder and instantly all titles were restored. In the meantime we have re-edited and exported most of the projects and no issues at all. So I would say: just go for it.

When I get back in my office I'll give the update a shot. I have 6 or 7 very simple but very long projects- 4-6 hours long each one that took a long time to set up and render which I would like to re open in 10.1.2 and be able to use. My goal is not to go through the lengthy prep and set up of each of those projects....

I personally highly doubt you have anything to worry about. Whereby after the import/conversion FCP gives you the explicit option to SAVE the old versions of all the projects (whilst barely adding any data btw, because the files are hard-linked). So if you choose to do that and push comes to shove and something actually DOES go horribly wrong, then you can always just pop back to the old version(s). That of course would also entail your archiving the old version of FCP first...
