Pro Apps Codec update = loosing 2nd monitor
on Jul 14, 2014 at 11:20:27 pm

Just updated the Pro Apps codec today along with FCPX 10.1.2 and now the OS does not see my second monitor. Boot up in my old lion disk and the monitor works fine. Did a repair permissions to the Mavericks drive and rebooted but no second monitor. Anyone else have this happen? Work arounds?

What happens if you switch the monitor cables, does the problem follow the port?

Hey Jeremy - Yes it does follow the port. i.e. only one port working. Tried zapping the PRAM as well with no luck. I will try the old GT120 later today and see if that works. Glad I don't have any real work in the shop this week. !!

Are they DVI cables or what are the ports?

Both monitors are working when driving them with the GT120 that came with the machine. Not sure what next steps are to get the 680 back to showing both monitors.

In your display prefs, can you "gather windows"?

With the GT120 the "gather windows" is a selection. With the GTX680 it is not.

Just downloaded the new nVidia driver 6.0.54, restarted and still only one monitor is working.

If you hold option on "gather windows" it should turn to "detect displays". Does that work?

Do you have any extenders or adapters beyond the dvi cable?

The gather windows button does not show up at all when booted with the 680. The old Cinema displays are directly connected. No adaptors or extension cables. Thx

Then just hold the option button. Detect displays should pop up in the lower right corner.

Did you uninstall the old one first? If not try it, reinstall and try again.

Searched for how to uninstall the driver. Can't seem to find the
/System/Library/Extensions/CUDA
/System/Library/StartupItems/CUDA
/usr/local/cuda/lib/libcuda.dylib

files. Deleted the

/Library/Frameworks/CUDA.framework
/Library/LaunchAgents/com.nvidia.CUDASoftwareUpdate.plist
/Library/PreferencePanes/CUDA Preferences.prefPane

files and restarted. No Cuda driver in the prefs pane, downloaded the driver from nVidia site and rebooted to same issue. So I assume I need to find these files and delete them as well

OK found all the files and trashed them again. Downloaded the web driver from nVidia and installed that. rebooted and only one monitor. Went into pref pane and selected use OS default drive and restarted, no change. Then downloaded the native driver and updated that. rebooted = no change

And you reboot to Lion and it works again?

If this is so, it might be time to think about reloading Mavs.

I have tried following directions from an Apple post on how to re install the os. At the grey boot up screen hit command - R and select re install. However on my machine I do not get this option. Is there another way to re install Mavs with out building up a new drive? Thank you all for you help!

Upon restart, hold option. Do it right after the chime, before grey screen.

From there, you should be able to choose recovery disk.

Once booted to recovery, the first thing I would do is use disk utility and repair permissions.

Then reboot to normal.

If you are still having problems, reboot to recovery and reinstall. Make sure you have all of your data backed up before reinstall.

If none of that works, you have to download Mavs from AppStore.

Hmmm. All I can tell you is I went through this same dance with a slightly different config. Kept getting error messages about Nvidia software not being compatible. Just yesterday there was a new update on nvidia and when I uninstalled installed and so forth it now seems to be working with nvidia cuda and card driver. Bottom line was the latest Mav OS broke it and now its fixed. I also needed to update the one for black magic to drive my broadcast monitor.

Tried re installing the os from the recovery disk and same issue. Installed Mavs on an old system disk that had Snow Leopard on it. Same issue. Tried to update the cuda driver from 4.2.10 from within the pref pane and the update fails.

Need to get running for a color job that starts on Monday. Perhaps I need to build up a new SSD from the ground up?!

If you have this issue in two OSes, that port may be dead.

However when I boot the same machine under 10.8.5 BOTH monitors are working with the GTX 680 card.

After re formatting a drive, installing 10.9.4, downloading the cuda web driver, repairing permissions, restarting a number of times, I still have the same issue of only one monitor operational under 10.9.4. going into the preferences and selecting the cuda updater it says that there is a newer version available, once it try to install the new driver it fails at 20% each time. No difference with web driver or OSX driver.

So for now once again all FCPX work will have to be done on one monitor. Just went through this same thing a few months ago. All of this does not feel very pro to me. Perhaps I just need to purchase the $6000 dongle.

Hopefully nVidia will have the latest driver available for web download sometime soon.

Update: Following the instructions about halfway down this page from "therandyzone"
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6430600

deleting the kext files downloading the other ones in the link and installing them with Kext Utility has worked for me. I now have my second monitor back on my GTX680 running under 10.9.4. Very happy :)

What card is connected to the second display? You may need to update the software. This update killed my nvidia driver.

Thats because that graphics card does not have the support for the dual Dvi-D connections at that rez.

drop in a different graphics card and it's not an issue.

Interesting, I am not seeing that issue occur on any of my systems (including the NMP)

I have 2 4K screens on my NMP via display port and not having any issues.

Open up any app and try to spread the window across two screens.
This is under Mavericks.
We ran into this with Adobe products then VLC.
You will also notice that where your mouse is active there is a menu at the top.
The days of one menu on one screen is gone.
