How to do FCPX to After Effects round trip?
on Jul 13, 2014 at 6:24:01 am

I really love FCPX but the stabilization is nothing compared to Adobe's warp stabilization? What is the correct workflow in getting a clip from FCPX out to AE for stabilization and then back?

Thank you!!

Nice article Oliver. I would add that the more functional way to get stuff to AE is to export an FCPXML, then use X to 7 to convert it to XML, which AE can import directly. Of course it's not free. It's $50. But if you're a previous and still occasional FCP 7 user, it can also come in handy to export to 7, then clean up your tracks for an OMF export to protools. It supports many more functions and features than ClipExporter. ClipExporter is great for getting a series of shots across to AE. But if you need more of the key framing or scaling/cropping etc. to get across, then Xto7 is your buddy in my experience.

I haven't gotten that to work. When I tried, AE acted like it was trying to import the XML and then nothing showed up. However, you can import into Premiere Pro and then copy & paste the timeline into an AE composition. Or use Dynamic Link.

Hey guys, I'm a bit confused. I looked into those links. I came from the photography world. Every editor in that world has a round trip ability. You literally right click on a piece of media and send it to an external editor. Then when you are done it comes back into the program with the edit.

Where is this for FCPX? I'm not sending the whole project. I'm just sending a clip in the timeline to some other program to do some stabilization.

It doesn't exit, yet. The closest to this process right now is using a plug-in like Magic Bullet Looks, which doesn't stabilize, of course. Premiere Pro and AE can do this (roundtrip via Dynamic Link). FCP 7 & Motion 4 could do this ("send to Motion"). FCP X currently cannot.

OTOH, If you want to stabilize inside FCP X, I would recommend CoreMelt's Lock & Load X.
